Rackspace literally decimates workforce: One in ten staffers let go this week

Steve K

Re: nah, it's not because they are short of money

Yep - they have changed their services pricing model now, making it much more expensive (both for Rackspace-hosted and Managed AWS/Azure), PLUS there is a minimum monthly spend regardless of the service levels chosen. It is no longer a general services pot (i.e. draw down time as you need it, wherever you need it) either, so you end up having to buy more than you need over >1 service area.

I think the VCs are looking to milk things a bit further.

Any new hosting requirements for our clients is likely to be elsewhere....

Pre-orders open for the Mini PET 40/80, the closest thing to Commodore's classic around

Steve K

Re: 8k is enough for anyone

My Dad had a Pet 8000 to run Visicalc and some Stock Control software in 1979/80.

I can remember the command "dload cosmicwars 8000" to run a Space Invaders clone - which even then was disappointing as the packaging always had better graphics than the game in those days - especially when you looked at what was in the arcades.

ZX-81 games were similarly packaged and disappointing - you have to be of a certain age to remember the excitement of buying a ZX-81 tape in WHSmith, but then the crushing disappointment of a few blocks moving on the screen when you got it home and loaded it up. They never had these games running as demos, for good reason!

Even worse was if it was a bad tape and you spent hours for it never even loading, and then there was the RAM pack wobble (not confined to just the ZX-81) waiting until you had typed pages of hex listings in in to crash and void your evening's toil! Typos in the magazines usually meant that they never worked anyway even if you keyed it in correctly and avoided the RAM pack wobble.

I can echo the sentiment above that at the time it seemed like magic (although tempered by what you saw in arcades), but actually it was a bit shit (but it's all that was available for home/small business use).

Ethernet standards wonks eye up speeds beyond 400Gb/s

Steve K

Re: In the meantime 10Gb/s has been available for years now ...

2.5Gbe is available and it's a lot cheaper than 5/10 Gbe too.

QNAP do a cheap 5-port 2.5Gbe switch and their newer NAS come with 2.5Gbe ports too.

2.5Gbe is closer to the max disk throughput from SSDs/RAID.

For example the SSDs from my VM host can now back up at 2.1 Gbps from NVME to SSD-tiered NAS volumes via the 2.5Gbe switch which is as fast as I am going to get.

Steve K

Re: In the meantime 10Gb/s has been available for years now ...

10Gb/s kit is not aimed at consumers really since to get anywhere close to saturating that requires a load of other expensive kit (e.g. SSDs/RAID) since the bottleneck is no longer the NIC(s).

There will always be enthusiasts wanting to get it running, but they aren't the target market either.

Re: At Gobaskof, re: SatNav...

To be fair here, most car SatNavs i have used offer you a "fastest", "shortest" and a "most efficient" or maybe "non-motorway/freeway" option, so it sounds like the SatNav could have only been doing what it has been told (e.g. in this case it wasn't told which one to take so took the default).

Known software issue grounds Ingenuity Mars copter as it attempted fourth flight

Steve K

Re: Have you tried switching it off and on again?

Hopefully also they don't hit the end of the 30-day flight window before they fix/test it, otherwise Perseverance may be off on the rest of its mission.

I know it's not part of the plan, but it would be cool if they could put Ingenuity into a "follow me" mode where it keeps (say) 20m away in a series of hops from Perseverance until it finally breaks.

I suppose that the risk is that something breaks and it then hits the rover and jams/breaks something.
