Ubuntu on a phone, anyone? UBports reaches 18th stable update, but it's still based on 16.04

Re: Funny thing...

And it only came to prominence after ms subverted Nokia, not coincidentally killing off maemo just as it was maturing into a viable phone os.

(granted, Nokia weren't exactly managing it well at the time, but ms delivered the coup de gras)

Cyberlaw experts: Take back control. No, we're not talking about Brexit. It's Automated Lane Keeping Systems

Graham Dawson Silver badge

Re: Automation

I feel that's the difference. Cruise control maintains a constant speed under your own command, but it doesn't control the vehicle. It can't slow down for you. All these other technologies purport to control some active aspect of driving, like maintaining lane position, or slowing down when an obstacle appears, or navigating the car. When I'm driving with cruise control I still have to keep my eye on the road and my hands on the wheel. I still have to be ready to brake when traffic is slowing. I'm still mentally in control of the car, I just have a perfect foot position.

The problem with control automation is that you reduce your attention to what the car is doing. That's dangerous.

Re: Automation

As an anecdotal conformation, my old jeep, built circa 1999, has cruise control. It also hates going over 63 (why 63 specifically I have no idea, but it reliably overheats if I go past that). So anything over 50, I put it in cruise control at 60 and just trundle along. If someone wants to pass me, they can figure it out themselves.

Uncle Sam sanctions Chinese AI outfits for links to Xinjiang Uyghur human-rights abuses

Re: Sanctions based on made-up bullshit allegations

There are multiple, independent, verifiable sources for the Uighur genocide. It's not even unprecedented; China has conducted "sinofication" efforts against other minorities within its borders, with great success. They consider everyone who isn't Han as subhuman.

Re: They lied about COVID

We knew about the landing before they announced it, due to changes in the doppler shift of the signals their probe was sending back to earth. It's difficult to hide things in space. Much easier on earth.

Chinese rocket plunges into Indian Ocean, still lands sharp rebuke from NASA

Graham Dawson Silver badge

Re: Double standards?

I'm saying there's a clear difference between a spent stage that goes slightly off course during a planned de-orbit and a spent stage that is abandoned to fall in some random spot. It's the difference between aiming your rubbish at the bin and having a bit escape, and throwing your rubbish out of a high speed car.

Graham Dawson Silver badge

Re: Double standards?

The difference is that was a planned re-entry, with a defined entry window and with little chance of causing damage due to the size and direction of the spent stage. The Chinese rocket was just left to fall where it would, without care or consideration for it's impact.
