Google: Flash stays on YouTube, and here's why

paulc
WTF?

confused...

I cannot see how on Earth MPEG LA can even begin to think about creating a patent pool on something that doesn't belong to it...

Quite simple Google, just do it and push everybody over to using HTML5 + WebM if they want to continue viewing videos on Youtube and any page that embeds them... make it the defacto standard...

Microsoft hit with Salesforce patent 'violation' counter punch

paulc
Unhappy

sadly

Microsoft will quite happily lose this case as it will strengthen their patent FUD... If they do go into bat to defend themselves here, it will be on the grounds that the patent itself is invalid for some reason, They will never go in to have software patents per se invalidated as non-patentable subjects as that would immediately render their own FUDchest of patents useless

Mr Ballmer goes to Washington for China pirate gripe

paulc
Pirate

bring it, bring it on...

remember, Microsoft are making all sorts of bluster about Chinese piracy, but they would far rather the Chinese pirate Windows & Office, than have them switch to Linux and/or OpenOffice...

Expect them to get the Chinese to enact a law stating that computers can only be sold with an operating system pre-installed and that in order to claim tax rebate on it for depreciation, it must be commercial software... they won't do it themselves, but will get their goons, the BSA, to do it for them while hiding behind the BSA front... They're currently trying this scam in the Czech Republic:

In the meantime, still waiting for re. Bilski to bring about the death of software and business method patents...

I just love the tortuous dancing Microsoft does when they are defending themselves against a software patent... fighting like mad to get a patent overthrown, but dancing all round the fact that software shouldn't be patentable in the first place as it would render their own patent warchest useless...

Government wastes millions on redundant cycle route planner

paulc
FAIL

National cycle network!!!

"Sustrans national cycle network is one example,"

it's a total joke... you only have to see the meandering route that Route 41 takes through Gloucestershire to realise that the cyclist is being paid lip service to... the official route has you weaving around all over the place crossing and recrossing major junctions with absolutely no consideration given to safety or reduction of Journey time... I'm convinced it was made as long and tortuous as possible in order to maximise the length of cycle lane used for it... no attempt was made to actually segregate the cyclists, just random patches of red lanes and dual purpose cycle lanes on the footpaths... all done to claim a subsidy from the EU no doubt

no one actually uses it because 1) very few know it exists and 2) those few who do know of it know it's completely unfit for purpose...

"Maggie decommissioned the HMS Endurance to save money, and we ended up with the Falklands War as a result. What unintended consequence are we going to get this time out of Cameron trying to save on spend?"

crap... HMS Endurance saw action during the Falklands conflict...

"On 19 March 1982 while the ship was at Stanley, South Georgia was occupied by Argentinian civilians. The Endurance, commanded by Captain Nick Barker, was sent to order the Argentinians off the island. Endurance had a small Royal Marines detachment and took further Marines from NP (Naval Party) 8901, and sailed on 21 March for South Georgia. Arriving on 25 March, she encountered the Argentinian transport Bahia Buen Suceso, which had landed 100 troops, and Endurance landed her marines before returning to the Falklands on 30 March. She joined up with the British task force in April and landed SBS soldiers at Hound Bay on South Georgia on 22 April. With the threat of a submarine presence, other vessels moved into deeper waters but Endurance moved into sea ice near the shore. On 25 April two Wasp ASW helicopters flying from Endurance assisted in attacks on the submarine Santa Fe, which was later abandoned by her crew. When the Argentinian forces surrendered on the 26th the Endurance remained in the vicinity of the island as a guard."

Dell: Linux v Windows netbook returns a 'non-issue'

paulc

re advertising

"Advertising #

By BOBSta Posted Thursday 13th August 2009 11:02 GMT

Perhaps if Dell where to start "Recommending Ubuntu" on it's PCs instead of Windows Vista, people would buy more of them? It's very difficult (IMO) to find any reference to Linux or Ubuntu on the Dell website..."

Microsoft pay Dell to recommend Vista... they don't get the OEM Vista price reduced, but they get market development funds which is Microsoft's way of getting round the fact that they have to make Vista OEM available to all OEMs at the same price... the more points you "score" by doing things Microsoft wants like hiding your Linux versions so you can't find them via the main website, the more money you get... If your volume is small, you get less funds... so the big boys effectively get a better "discount" on the deal because they get more market development funds because of their sheer volume.

http://news.cnet.com/Gateway-exec-Microsoft-too-powerful/2100-1016_3-868413.html

**************************quote*****************************

Gateway also faulted another provision of the new licensing agreement, which requires PC makers to pay a Windows royalty on every PC shipped, even if it didn't include Windows. To top it off, to qualify for market development funds, PC makers have to put a Microsoft OS on every PC. As a result, trying to sell non-Windows PCs, or even PCs without software, is a financial loser for computer makers.

"In other words, Gateway must comply with this provision in order to receive any market development funds," Fama said. The discount is substantial: $10 per copy of Windows.

"Since that $10 discount would apply to each copy of Windows XP that Gateway distributes during 2003, it would not be commercially practical to consider compliance...as optional," Fama testified.

Java desktop

to put it plainly... sucked...

Computers in 2004 were too slow to run it well and they designed the machine down to the minimum and as a result the java desktop became a major bottleneck...

the primary reason you don't see many Linux boxes in the shops is because the vast majority of magazines have adverts which are part paid for by Microsoft with what are called "market development funds"... which have the primary intent of subsidizing those box makers who toe the Microsoft line... the more points they score, the more funds they get... and selling Linux boxes reduces the score...
