'Technical error' threatens Vodafone customers with four-figure roaming fees

Chris G

I often wonder if the 'accidental' misbilling by certain phone companies is a ruse to get interest free loans from unsuspecting customers.

It happens often enough and to sufficiently large numbers that it probably adds up to millions a year.

I have had mistakenly high bills on and off from every company I have ever dealt with, oddly, I have never had a mistakenly low bill.

Question reality

As far as political statements are concerned, virtually everybody I speak to, Spanish, English or otherwise doubt the veracity of what they are being told.

It doesn't seem to matter about the source either, previously reliable or unquestioned newspapers or TV channels are all looked upon with doubt equal to that applied to well known propaganda outlets.

Now, I wonder who we should blame for that?

Re: Demand ramping up....

Between more tariffs being handed out willy nilly, GM joining the junk bond club, Fannie and Freddie Mae likely to be sold off to the same players that kicked off the last crisis, the Fed spiralling interest rates down past hells gate while the rest of America is borroing itself to a standstill, you may get your wish for a crisis but I don't think it will stimulate PC sales.

Personally I have started growing potatoes and stockpiling tinned food.

Oh dear... AI models used to flag hate speech online are, er, racist against black people

Chris G

Re: “I saw his ass yesterday”

Adding to the potential for increasing bias or lack of flexibility, is the fact that, at street level, particularly with younger speakers who then take the idioms of youth with them as they mature. Language evolves and frequently what may have been rude before becomes an acceptable part of every day speech.

The regular language and even subject matter on TV such as the Graham Norton show for example, would have caused all kinds of trouble back when I lived in the UK.

How does an AI stay updated to the constant evolution of language.

Aside from it not really being intelligent.

Re: This requirement for paper bills/statements...

ID cards are fine in places like France or Spain where I live but in the UK they would rapidly become an abused millstone around the necks of the British people.

Also when I tried to get my name taken off the deeds to the house I lived in twenty years ago in the UK, it was a nightmare. The courts had failed to log my passing the house over to.my ex at the time of the divorce, in the following twenty years they had also mamnaged to lose one or two other bits and pieces.

Cue thirteen months of paper based hoop jumping because in Spain everyone has got their act together on bills and identity but nothing any kind of official in the UK would recognise, even I was doubting my identity after a while.

Europe publishes 5G risk assessment; America scrawls ‘Huawei’ on the side of a nuke and goes for a ride

Chris G

Fair trading

Most of the issue about Huawei is about fair trading, it's not fair that they hold a large number of 5G patents, can undercut American companies and have an unfairly large hold on the industry world wide. So the US is doing what it always does with foreign competitors who are a threat to its hold on world markets, that is, everything they can to bring it down as they can't control it. Of course the security issue is also important, the monopoly on that should also be US based with a little help from sidekicks with 'Special Relationships'.

Heavy data protection regulation looms in Labour plans for post-Brexit flows and IoT devices

Chris G

Re: Whatever the future of IoT and/or data regulation

It seems (a little late to the party) that for politicians, IoT and 5G have just become the next big thing.

Even Boris' speech to thr UN was largely a about concerns over society, privacy and their relationships with new tech.

I hate to admit it but his speech was actually quite vood and well informed.

It seems as though all the politicians have suddenly woken up and realised the IoT is a thing that can impact their careers and election chances, still don't trust a single one of them to actually produce anything of genuine value to the nation though.

We're all doooooomed: Gloomy Brit workforce really isn't coping well with impending Brexit

Chris G

Re: When to move abroad

I agree with most of what you say but the UK will not be rejoining Europe, in a few years it will have become a satellite economy of the US, the NHS will be dismantled, the the welfare state will be allowed to fall into disrepair and there will no longer be any singularly British businesses of a y consequence.

The US must be loving brexit because it leaves Europe weaker as a competitor and Britain as hanging fruit ripe for the picking and with no real economic strength to resist.

brexiteers are going to reap the whirlwind.

Chris G

Re: Not coping well with Brexit

" The chances of a recession everywhere are increasing"

Brexit is a side issue and a distraction as far as a wider recession is concerned, really Brexit is just another stick being thrown on to what could become a not so merry blaze.

With certain people peeling bananas with their feet while signing trade and other war executive orders with their hands willy nilly and also printing money as fast as it is possible to do, we just need one or two little things to push everything over the edge.

Then UK woes with Europe will be insignificant as the world will go into overdrive rescuing too large to fail corporations while everyone else stuggles to survive.

Computer says no: An expression-analysing AI has been picking out job candidates for Unilever

Chris G

Re: Job seekers sit in front of a laptop or mobile phone and complete an automated video interview

Interviews are a two way street.

Not only for an employer to decide if they wish to hire an individual but also for the individual to decide if they want to work there.

I have declined a few jobs due to them not meeting my requirements.

As for Unilever or anyone else using this tech, they are limiting themselves to a narrow selection of corporate clones and I hope they reap from what they are sowing.

They sound like the kind of company that will send you a cardboard box via the janitor and an email telling you to clear out your desk because you are smiling too much/not smiling enough in company time.

Consumer campaign to keep receiving printed till receipts looks like a good move – on paper

Chris G

It doesn't stop there

It's not only digital receipts but also totally digital money. There are strong lobbies at the fed and the Euro bank to digitise all money, then you won't need a receipt, your entire existence will be visible to almost anyone who has an interest what you bought, when you bought it and probably some marketeer will come up with an algorithm that will give an idea of why you bought it based on allbthe other info they have stored.

Chris G

Amazing technology

With my drawer full of receipts, I can access them at any time simply by opening the drawer, there is no boot up time then accessing the relevant program. If I need to go back to a retailer for any aspect of customer service I can put the receipt in my pocket and show it immediately, plus in the event of needing it in a SHTF and it's dark situation, all I need is a candle.

A further thought before leaving a shop after a purchase, if I had no choice but digital, I wouldn't leave the counter to until I had received the digiceipt.
