Boeing puts Loyal Wingman robot fighter jet through its paces... on the ground

Chris G

Taxiing challenge

Based on my experience working on light airframes, we would often go to collect and aircraft from the other side of the field and then taxi back to the hangar.

The challenge was not only discerning the taxi ways but also the myriad of student pilots and often the 'too late to have flown in the war' type members of the flying clubs who invariably had Spitfire tie pins along with some semblance of a handlebar mustache but little common sense.

If Boeing can get the Loyal Wingman to autonomously negotiate it's way across an airfield's taxi ways with several flying clubs based there, and do it on a weekend, it will be able to handle any of the dog fighting stuff easily.

One of our commonest repair jobs was changing wing tips that had been dinged on taxiing.

"Make the ammo expensive and accountable"

You mean like having a pandemic so all the SHTF crazies buy up all the common calbres (much of it online so accountable to a point). Many of those crazies seem to be showing up at a lot of demos, I am amazed that all that firepower hasn't gone loonytoons yet.

Still, it's not over yet.....

It's important to keep up appearances and those doughnuts won't eat themselves.

As far as my phone is concerned the damning evidence is conclusive, there is sod all on it so I must be hiding a lot somewhere else.

A serious lack of market research, and pre-planning.

Re: El Reg becoming political now ?

I think it rates as very newsworthy for a tech publication to report on the failed promises from a world class tech company and the POTUS, to construct a huge bigly factory, gain billions in potential subsidies and then not only fail to deliver but keep making promises that are clearly never going to happen.

You may be unhappy about the reporting, think hiw unhappy those in Wisconsin are.

Samsung aims boot at Apple's decision not to bundle a charger in with the iPhone 12, foot ends up in mouth

Chris G

Re: Pardon the silly question...

Bare tools are fine for DIYers but pro's often have several tools on the go at any one time so end up needing to buy extra batteries at a premium price and then find they need to buy extra chargers. Bare tools professionally is a marketing ploy. One make at least, does sell a charger for several batteries at once though.

@osakajin

The trouble is the dividing line between government and megacorps is almost invisible now.

Between lobbying and interdependence via contracts and essential services that gov's now depend on to function, the mega corps have a huge influence on how government works and seemingly a fair amount of say.

That was happening well before the likes of FB et al, I suspect that particular aspect of population manipulation goes back centuries.

Not to say that dismantling much of the current social media wouldn't be beneficial for the world.

The biggest dangers of modern social media is the speed of the propogation of new lies or memes.

Re: Alternate reality

In the village in North Kent where I used to keep my horses, a lovely old housein the village was bought by a green welly type. Within a year he was complaining about the neighbouring farm that in one form or another had been there for centuries.

It went to court where the Welly merchant had more money and possibly friends, the court rulings made it impossible to operate the farm profitably so my mate went out of business abd sold up. Nobody in the village woukd speak to the green welly arsehole andvthe pybs wouldn't serve him, so after fecking up the livelihood of a family and upsetting a whole village, the idiot sold up qnd left.

Planned preventative maintenance may be worth considering too, I have foundthat to be an excellent way of avoiding down time for most equipment.

I have run maintenance on a number of contracts where downtime would result in a fine after a short period of time, nothing quite like a dent in profits to focus the bosses minds on the best SOPs.

NHS looks to the market for advice on one system to replace two separate, giant Oracle ERP and HR systems

Chris G

So based on what I gleaned from the video, the NHS is fragmented into so many different body, organisations and systems, that there are probably 20-30 managers, administrative and support staff for every doctor and nurse or qualified medical practitioner.

It looks as though the whole thing needs to be nuked from above and started from scratch. Of course that would not be too good for anyone who is currently unwell.

India to build home-grown supercomputers, from the motherboards up

Chris G

Re: Two Ways

India is talking about self sufficiency not stupidity, no one country has the resources to be totally inward looking. Even the US had to buy titanium from the Soviet Union during the cold war to build it's SR71s.

The Legal languages of India are Hindi and English, most official documents and reports from parliament are printed in those two languages as are the majority of research papers, the High Court uses legal English.

The three top languages in India are only spoken by about a third of the population, the rest speak their own regional/ethnic languages and often one or more others so the government is unlikely to alienate a significant portion of it's population.

Amazon-like megacorps dominating various online sectors could become norm for pandemic-stricken planet

Chris G

Re: No, they don't.

So these companies will regard the end of the pandemic as bad for business.

Does that mean they will push the anti-vaxxer narrative or will they look for other ways to encourage us all to continue social distancing.

Even if the vaccines don't work, the pandemic is not going to last forever.

I don't relish a world run by a few online companies like Amazon, FB, Uber and Sainsbury's online, none of them are particularly sociable and the more of a monopoly they are, the less sociable they become

Microsoft tells staff work-from-home is now ‘standard’ – with caveats galore

Chris G

Re: Commuting

Just wait for some boss or beancounter who wants to reduce your pay based on less travelling time because ' that was a consideration' in calculating your pay and now you are at home.

The other thing that came up in a conversation recently, was a friend whose bosses are paranoid about staff proving that they working the hours they say rather than, I don't know, watching the Telly tubbies with the kids or something.

How long before a boss wants video surveillance in your home work space, or a tracking anklet?

WFH will not ultimately be any more or less of a blessing than going in to work, everything boils down to the beancounter's First law of acquisition, maximising profit.

Re: Uh ?

Having been in the past, a member of NATSOPA and then UNISON, I am generally in favour of the protections, support and added strength that unions afford workers. Providing they are subject to reasonable regulations just as employers should be.

More than one of the stewards at Natsopa (print union in the '70s) would have made Stalin look like a moderate but in general, union membership was a good thing and helped to keep a lot of employers from taking liberties with their employees.
