Jack Vance: Science fiction’s master of magic, mischief and sex

Andrew Moore

RIP

As a serious sci-fi geek as a kid I knew I must have read something of his. So a quick check of the library turns up the 4 Dying Earth books (with Cugel). I still remember the execution scene where the condemned man is put into a box which then slowly shrinks.

Nintendo throws flaming legal barrel at YouTubing fans

Andrew Moore
Facepalm

The stupid thing is...

Nintendo can quite easily make walkthroughs themselves and market them as 'official' on their YouTube channel and take the revenue without having to piss off their customer base. They also have the advantage of being able to show where the hidden stuff/Easter eggs are.

Re: Also...

The best thing about the whole operation was you could watch it all live (I did) on the NASA stream. It was strangely compelling- jobs that we would take for granted (like unscrewing bolts) took on a completely different difficulty.

Coke? Windows 8 is Microsoft's 'Vista moment'. Again

Andrew Moore
Black Helicopters

But remember...

New Coke did allow Coke Cola to change the recipe for the classic Coke by replacing the sweetener with the cheaper High Fructose Corn Syrup. They would not have been able to do that because people would be able to easily do taste comparisons if the New Coke buffer zone was not in place.

Big Media needs to examine their marketing methods...

In the UK GoT is only available on Sky Atlantic, which is a subscription channel only available to those who have signed up to Sky. Many people do not have (or want) this channel, so the only legal method for them to watch the series is to buy the box sets which come out long after the season ends. Or buy it on iTunes episode-by-episode for a lot more than the cost of the box set.

So in these days of immediate gratification, it means that people are going to use alternative methods to watch it. Which means illegal downloading.

The only way around this is to make it available through more widely accessible channels (BBC, Channel 4 etc) or stream it for a reasonable price.

Finally, if I buy the series via iTunes and then download it via a torrent in order to have it on physical media, does that still count as piracy?

Minecraft is proof that game-play is the prime factor in order for a game to succeed. Hi-res graphics; surround-sound; etc are all secondary to game-play. Home computer games in the 80s proved this.

No need- the way I can see to safeguard yourself against this is to create a gallery of all your online images and make sure they are tagged (by EXIF and captions) and accessible to image matching sites like TinEye. Then if someone uses your imagery without your permission claiming it was an 'orphan work', you can prove that they did not perform a "diligent search".
