Haha
That's right, have your dodgy position demolished by a well reasoned arguement so resort to a petulant ad hominem attack. Must suck to be you.

More often or not you get the same IP from a DHCP server, depending of course on the DHCP server configuration, how long the machine was offline and how heavily subscribed the address pool is. In any case I don't think the sample came from such a long period of time that machines would have been switched off long enough to make them appear from multiple addresses.
I thought you'd say there are lots of computer behind NAT, meaning the number of computers is actually higher.
The best suggestion so far was from my colleague, who figured the guy probably has psoriasis and was getting some light treatment for his skin problem. There seem to be pink patches on his shins to support that theory.
It would also explain why he'd be half naked in what I assume was cold weather. It's probably early spring time in the pictures as there are no leaves in the birch trees and there are some patches of snow further down the road, and the bright cloudless sky suggests it was barely above freezing.
If that's the case I feel very sorry for him.
They got the customer accounts, the developers and the brand.
The original MySQL company was quite profitable, the main business being selling support. The same goes for other OSS vendors like RedHat, whose product can be easily forked (see CentOS). They still have the old customer base. How many enterprises who are currently Sun/Oracle MySQL customers are going to switch over to MariaDB?
The MySQL name and the domain are quite valuable, which is the reason Monty so desperately wants it back. You can make your own for but getting the mindshare among users and developers is not that simple.
This argument applies mainly to the USA and other countries where contract phones are the norm. There the operators heavily customize the phones to have their own logos and software, and often restrict their use in various ways.
To turn this argument on its head, maybe the demand for a larger variety of handsets by a diversifying client base will eventually push the operators to start selling competitive SIM-only plans when they realize they can't support the whole range themselves.
Yes wireless standards involve paying but it's not about "suing anyone who tries to adopt it". The standards bodies stipulate that the tech has to be licensed at a fair price so innovation is rewarded while not putting barriers on adoption. It's not about making it prohibitively expensive - that would work against the whole idea of having standards.
The "old" comms players have had disagreements but they all cross license their technologies to each other. Nokia, Ericsson, Texas Instruments, Qualcomm, Motorola etc. are all involved in creating the tech and agreeing on the standards. It has served both purposes: innovation has been rewarded and our cell phones now work all over the world. Now we have Apple fans and anti-software patent fanatics jumping to conclusions. This is not about software patents.
The Reg really goes out on a limb on this one. I find it difficult to believe it's accidental either, and as a regular Reg reader this makes me sad.
The figures in the report are from downloaded ads by a single advert broker. But smartphone usage is not the same as smartphone Internet browsing.
"AdMob also serves mobile ads into iPhone and Android applications. The traffic from these applications is included in the Metrics report".
Think about it a moment. What a surprise that iPhone and Android come out tops. Half the downloads were also in the USA. Final quote from the report:
"Representativeness - AdMob does not claim that this information will be necessarily representative of the mobile Web as a whole or of any particular countrymarket."
Instead of wasting your time on lengthy pontification you could have spent a moment looking at the Splunk blog post. It's a cut and dry case of wholesale plagiarism, not a just copying the look and feel. MS have taken their service domn and a public mea culpa is to follow. No court case.
Paris because she'd have more brains
The anglo-american crowd shows its lack of practical experience with the metric system.
"about 18” tall" does not translate to "45.72 cm". Look at a ruler to get an idea about the level of accuracy you imply (your rulers have metric on the other side, right?), don't just copy and paste from the calculator. Just say "about 45 cm" or even "about 0.5 m". I guess the distinction is hard if you're not used to thinking in metric.
Reminds me of the milk bottle I saw in a UK supermarket that said "2 pints, 1.13652 liters". Could I complain if the volume was off by a hundredth of a milliliter?
Another favourite is the use of grams in anglo-american cooking recipes for our "benefit". Who the heck measures flour by the gram? Come on, 1 cup is 2 deciliters for all practical purposes, you need to manually fine tune the consistency of the dough/batter anyway. In my kitchen we use a deciliter measure, a table spoon, a teaspoon and fingers for pinches.
A pint because it's a recognized unit for beer world wide.
There's a bit of historical baggage with frequency auctions in Finland. The Finnish ex-incumbent Sonera pissed away billions in Germany during the first 3G auction craze, billions that eventually had to be written off as losses. It destroyed the company's value. Sonera was eventually bou^H^H^H merged with the Swedish Telia at less than favourable terms.

What a load of crock. Let me guess, you've never admitted to being wrong. You talk about people being "flexible" with their values and beliefs, like it's bad. I'll talk to you about people making up justifications to support their own beliefs in the face of undeniable evidence.
You've set up a false dichotomy between self-chosen values and the "right" set of values of the majority. In fact we all have outside influences but ultimately we have free will and are individually responsible for our choices.
If the majority is right, how can both the people of US and North Korea be right? How can both Jews and Muslims be right? Don't they all follow the majority beliefs in their societies? If you ever wondered how people justified to themselves taking part in the holocaust or slavery, look at your own post.
Don't try to hide behind the majority view, because if you know any history, the majority view changes. It was OK to be a racist in the USA 50 years ago, but not now. In fact green values have already become the norm in many countries. While SUVs are not evil in themselves, yes, it's antisocial to drive an SUV if you can make do with a less polluting alternative.
Wrong. See:
- allocation unit size in the Windows disk format dialog.
Small allocation unit size -> more space used for metadata -> less space left for data -> smaller "formatted capacity"
Large allocation unit size -> files that are smaller than the allocation unit result in "wasted" space
The nasty stallmanites have come to steeeaall your mojo (since you already gave away your code) and they will give Nothing! They'll bin your ports and replace your man pages with GNU info! *maniacal cackles* Seriously though, the beauty of OSS is that good ideas live and develop while obsolete ideas die - as opposed to the so called free market where other factors like patents and marketing matter more. So stop being afraid, protective or sceptical. You cannot lose, you can only gain. BTW nice as it was, I gave up Frisbee for now. Horses etc.
Awesome. Not surprisingly the author of the original article is "Min Chun (intern)".
The second article on that page is just as good. If I can interpret the translation correctly, the people of Martinique never bend over to pick up anything, even valuable items. This is because French invaders used to "Sri Lanka disgrace them" (sounds horrible) and ride the people like horses. After a brave individual threw off his French rider they decided never to bend over for anyone or anything.
With all due respect: you, esteemed sir, are going off half cocked. Both the El Reg article and my comment refer to The Local (see, capitalized), which is the origin of this story. What The Local is local to, I can only guess. (Sweden, or a part thereof?)
Here's the URL again, so craftily hidden at the top of my previous post:
http://www.thelocal.se/22476/20091005/
The article in The Local does have a screenshot with an attribution to jx.xinhuanet.com. Now looking for a Chinese speaker to give us the details.
Funniest article and comments ever. Bravo. Thanks to AQ for another Black Adderesque episode that gave us so many "jokes about ze breaking ov ze vind". While a sound rebuttal of Saudi tyranny, it was an overly literal take on assassination. Maybe they ought to employ a consultant or two. Maybe someone from Belfast this time, not a CIA mole.
And dismissing the concerns as purely racism is a convenient way to justify maintaining your destructive and selfish lifestyle. Before you ask, I'm limiting my white self to two kids because I believe it's the Right Thing to do (cue jokes here). It's not even about how many people the earth can support, it's how many can have a good life of plenty. I reckon that's less than the 6bn odd we have now.
Could we please have a poll with each thread, to save people posting their predictable rants and us wading through them? A lá:
- ha ha
- mine works
- serves the smug gits right
- my expert opinion (anecdotal evidence) says this is BS
- I blame reg/MS/user/anyonebutjobs
- reg is biased
If there is a bias in the poll, why is the reverse true in this thread? It occurs to me Apple users keep it in the family, crying in the 'privacy' of their forums but being defensive in 'public'. A bit like an abuse victim.
Special hugs to Lord Shocktroop for a great attempt at pre-emptive defence for Master Jobs. I didn't bother reading the post but those caps tell me all I need to know about how you are feeling inside. It's a tough moment when faith and facts can no longer be reconciled.
Lay off it, you're just putting yourself down to the same "loon" level. Same goes for all others who think the OS their computer runs defines who or how big a boy they are: get a life, start respecting yourself and others. I understand tongue in cheek comments, but certain people really need a reality check.
Regarding Linux noobs (not loons), I think it's a good thing we're seeing evidence of clueless Linux users. It means Linux becoming more popular among the non-übergeek crowd. Not many years ago there wasn't a Linux user who couldn't configure X with only a text editor, simply because they had to. It's not like those vi-heads have stopped using Linux and moved to BSD. It's that Linux is becoming more mainstream, and that's a good thing.
To all Linux noobs: keep those silly mistakes coming, don't give up trying and learning.
Rgds,
A Linux, BSD & Windows loon
It's a good principle but the world is always more complex than that. The Internet is a common effort and ISPs have the responsibility to be good Internet citizens, ie. stop spam and DOS attacks originating from their networks. It is not hard and is done (semi) automatically by some ISPs on their home customer networks. When SMTP outgoing spikes massively you are put in a quarantine network where all port 80 traffic is redirected to a notice page saying your PC is a spam bot. A phone call gets your connection back. Surely UK law mandates that ISPs monitor their networks and keep them in order. They risk losing their business if their house is not in order, or should.
This is about the treatment of the admin not about the forum post. His only 'crime' was to have as customer a site that contained dissenting or critical voices. That is why this borders police state treatment. He had no control over the content, not even as a moderator. It's akin to blaming a mechanic or the off licence for encouraging or assisting a customer's drunk driving.
