First wasn't claim, best was.

The review of "app of the week" is not about first-in-class, but about being the best.

And given how much time you spend navigating around on it (and how much extra time/frustration when it goes wrong), any price between zero and five quid should be seen as equal, so not an argument for better/worse.

Yes you have.

I'm quite sure you've seen the videos of the (was he Polish?) guy in an American airport being tasered to death, even though he was contained in a room, obviously distressed and not a danger to others.

He'd just flown intercontinentally so chance of being high about zero; no alcohol was mentioned either.

It's like the Rodney King beating: it's all rumours and lies and impossible to happen in a well-run police department, until it's on video then it's an isolated case and no further steps necessary.

Marvin the Martian

No they don't help against knifing.

Chainmail helps more against hewing sword blades, not piercing attacks like arrows, knifes, and sabres.

You'll have to shell out for stab-proof kevlar jackets, plus a faraday cage.

But what do the teachers know?

It's not that far from the ICT skills demanded of all newly qualified teachers...

There's very strong pressure on subject-qualified teachers now; the days of the physics teacher/nerd also doing ICT is mostly over...

Only if you read the DM before 21h00.

Post-watershed, the Daily Fail's pictures are fine, so no reason to complain.

Your own fault if you read it before that watershed. It's the big society, you have to take care of yourself (otherwise the Fail would complain of the "nanny state").

@Tim: "only the case is well-engineered"

Nice argumentation but sadly reality doesn't agree with you. Compare the repair & return rates and you see Apple is clearly in the premier league. Costwise, too; they're more expensive than Asus but on the same level for the same spec with other premium brands. You get what you pay for.

Your video memory argument is clearly made-up, if we can agree to use TheRegister's reviews and 3DMark scores etc as a baseline.

Hm... maybe you've got a different reality.

This would seem reasonable.

Normally you assemble a list of your "peers", whom you deem to be of similar quality and function in related industries.

So if your surname is Schmidt, you could instead make a list of your peers called Schmidt, and sneak this one in.

Swamp Castle, plus dustbin

There's often enough a pointless and repetitive story, of human endeavour pointed the wrong way. Which deserves a swamp castle.

Obligatory quote:

<<When I first came here, this was all swamp. Everyone said I was daft to build a castle on a swamp, but I built in all the same, just to show them. It sank into the swamp. So I built a second one. That sank into the swamp. So I built a third. That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp. But the fourth one stayed up. And that's what you're going to get, lad, the strongest castle in all of England. >>

And I second earlier call for a dustbin, as "good riddance" is an often-relevant emotion.

Let's add more clutter

There's demands for love+hate Fry, love+hate Assange, love+hate zuckerberg, love+hate Facebook --- it will never end. There's already a love (heart), so just a generic hate will do and remove this clutter.

Actually, remove the gates/jobs icons; it's a false dichotomy anyway with an Ellison and a Ballmer to object to etc etc.

Let's be consistent: what is facebook-like activity?

One of the claimed standards is that "un-facebook-like activities must be removed". So, given that there's twee religious pages, anything professing atheism or humanism must be deleted; and vice versa. Two birds with one stone!

As the vast majority is inane twitter-like babbling, anything that makes sense should be removed.

The one reason is ABP, and Noscript. Hm. So, the two reasons are ABP and Noscript, and the wide user base across Linux/Mac/Windoze. Yes: the three reasons are APB, Noscript, wide user base, and an almost fanatical devotion to the brand. OK, among the chief reasons are: ...

Because 10 suicides per 1,000,000 over a few years sounds like a lot.

It isn't if you consider that the average is 140 per 1,000,000 per year [via http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide_in_the_People%27s_Republic_of_China ]. (Though these off course are mainly by unemployed people, so higher than expected for the factory workers.)

GIVING UP BOOZE CAUSES CANCER - shock study

Marvin the Martian
Unhappy

And the reason for giving up booze?

The only way I can see giving up booze is some major health scare.

Say cancer or heart trouble plus a severe talking to by a medical specialist: the "stopping booze" category will be heavier on this type of grave dodgers than the other, so I'd expect cancer rates to be higher in this group.

Yes, because success at one thing is always a fluke.

It's like all those Nobel prize winning scientists: they're d*cking around a decade, suddenly do something brilliant, d*ck around another decade or two to no effect, get prize, and do nothing useful again.

It's clear life is a lottery, and past results have no bearing on future rewards.

When I passed my driving theory without faults, I knew my life had suddenly peaked and the long way down started; I'd hoped I'd have a more impressive laurel to rest on than that but so be it...

I understand sites need to make money, so I don't have a problem with adverts. I've never felt compelled to push one, though, so the profiling hasn't worked yet.

But moving adverts drive me absolutely crazy. So first just blocked all GIF images, but the last few years it's not possible anymore; so it's ABP + NoScript for me, reluctantly --- that's what marketers might get to understand. Not yet, it's still a low hanging fruit phase of profiling.

Lost in supermarket loyalty

What does it even mean to be loyal to a supermarket?

I regularly go to four locations of three chains, two of which do loyalty thingies. Am I loyal to two, to three, or disloyal to all? I get a different balance of products at each, so they're like three different tools in my toolbox.

Linnaeus answered that for you.

After the Felidae --- there's still a lot to go, but I doubt "flat-headed cat", "domestic cat" and "chinese mountain cat" will be used --- you go up the evolutionary tree to go to the Feliformae... Hyena's, Mongooses, and the like.

You see they've already been mixing the Pantheridae and Felinae freely, there's ocelots, margays, caracals, servals and clouded leopards etc still to go. Feliformae gives us binturongs, liksangs, civets, genets, ... . From there it's a small mental (but larger evolutionary) jump to the Mustelids --- the weasel family which I think is appropriate: small expensive sneaky critters that punch above their weight.

... and that following the "Journos overstate news" shocker.

This article attributes all to incompetence; I'm doubtful. As news is the hack's bread-and-butter, saying "nothing to see, move along" is not a good attitude if you want to keep working. I suspect most journalists know how to read the press releases they're reediting, and how they're intended to read them; they just don't let they're not being misled.

Like the "climategate" journalist: his entire career has to be built on the supposition that an informal reference to a "trick" (i.e., "method" --- it was referring to a published technique) uncovers a big conspiracy. In interviews that hack shows he doesn't know anything on the topic, and just needs there to be an issue or he's back to his unemployed blogging self.
