Google: Oops, we've STILL got Street View's slurped Wi-Fi data

graeme leggett Silver badge

Re: Seriously?

It doesn't matter if it looks innocous, if it shows that data has been collected when it shouldn't have it.

And the ICO could ask another jurisidiction investigating the wifi slurp if they cold compare the sort of collected info.

Unfortunately google are damned by being open and honest here. Though they still have the "single newspaper reporter programmer" defence in place I believe.

Enjoyed it when I was young, perhaps it's time to renew the acquaintence. Though it might be a biit spooky for my son, and I don't fancy the task of explaining the ending to him.

And someone buys those collector edition Lego Death Stars - the ones without minifigs.

A Portal lego set would more likely end up as a bit of objet d'art in a worker's cubicle, bought for the recipient by family or friends than as a child's birthday present that spends a week or so assembled before the bits are reused in an unholy chimera of a model.

A couple of years ago, I travelled on East Coast Mainline service.

wifi was available throughout the journey, worked (after a brief registration was completed), and was free.

this January, I travelled again on the same East Coast mainline route

wifi was available, but was now charged for all but a brief 15 minutes of free use. 15 minutes for a journey between Peterborough and Aberdeen.

Re: The MoD should fund Bletchley Park

technically there was a Minister of Defence at the time - Churchill.

And there was a department within the ministry, MD1, which was a handy way for him to back a bunch of interesting characters in their weapon-developing enterprises: Stuart Macrae and Millis Jefferis being the prime two.

Between them they brought the Limpet Mine, Sticky bomb, PIAT and Time Pencil to the war effort, and by sharing with the admiralty's Directorate of Miscellaneous Weapons Development, the Hedgehog anti-submarine weapon.

It ought to be a partnership. You get the benefit of the franchiser's experience and resources (advertising etc) and you build a business with your own graft on top - end result both their and your bank balances are enriched.

The UK is a nation. England, Scotland etc are "consituent countries", and also nations. Hence you can say "the English national football team is forever letting its fans down". But the UK is a "sovereign state".

The Union Flag/Jack is the national flag of the UK. The red cross on a white background is the national flag of England, the white St Andrew's cross on a blue background is the national flag of Scotland etc, etc

The Pirani is definitely the way to go for measuring very low vacuums but they aren't cheap; Edwards want about £200 for one.

No surprise on pressure seal?

Assume the tube is 10 inches across - area of the tube end is 5 squared Pi or nearly 80 square inches.

At a vacuum of 26 inches of Mercury, the force down on the lid is the equivalent of having the best part of 1,000 lb sat on it.

I'm assuming a vacuum of 29 inch Hg is -15 lb/square inch pressure.

Re: US Loco Design

It seems that the loco in question is a ATSF 3460 class

Tractive effort - 220 kN

Weight with tender - 323 tonnes

0.68 kN per tonne

What may account for the difference is the tender weight, for a long journey a large tender and large coal and water supply is required

recalculating "output" excluding tender weight

Mallard - 1.45 kN/tonne

ATSF 3460 - 1.17 kN/tonne

graeme leggett Silver badge

Re: US Loco Design

Going by some freely available data

Mallard, 158 kN on 167 tonnes (with tender) - 0.95 kN/tonne

Milwaukee Road class F6 4-6-4 203 kN on 241 tonnes - 0.84 kN/tonne

(streamlined) F7 class 4-6-4 - 224 kN on 360 tonne - 0.64 kN/tonne

Not sure if that shows anything other than aerodynamics is important.

US space programme in shock metric conversion

graeme leggett Silver badge

Re: Imperialistic Americans

I think the only US unit that is bigger than the Imperial (avoirdupois) is the "fluid ounce" and then only by about a millilitre (or 1.5 ml if its the FDA's fluid ounce which is exactly 30ml).

Their Pint (both wet and dry) , Quart, Gallon, hundredweight and ton are all short measure.

graeme leggett Silver badge

Or mixing the units

convert to litres, divide by 4.55 and mulitply by 10?

I imp gallon = 4.546 litres, 1 imp gallon weighs 10 lb

graeme leggett Silver badge

Re: Not likely.

More than that, why measure something that is (to all intents and purposes) solid in unit of liquid (or at least free-flowing) measurement?

Our workforces do work in millimetres and kilos (and Nm-1 and the rest). Unless they are dealing with the US when they might work in inches and feet and lbs as well.

East Anglia

Now is that just Norfolk and Suffolk, or are you stretching the definition out to Cambridge and down into Essex to make it yourself that biit more anonymous?

graeme leggett Silver badge

I can see why some gear *might* be more expensive

If the kit is being used for matters where minimal interruption to business is a necessity, then buying kit that is going to last longer makes sense.

eg buying a brand-name Memory stick rather than a no-name since the price differential is much less than the time lost and aggravation caused by it not working one day (obviously the correct answer to the problem is not to put anything important on it in the first place)

But economies of scale ought to kick in somewhere, unless one is paying then for the "dedicated sales team" and superfast delivery at the other end.
