Ten badass brainy computers from science fiction

graeme leggett Silver badge

Re: Orac

@Tim11

Orac made "The System", the advanced and computer controlled civilisation that built the Liberator, blow up - so that he wouldn't be proved wrong about his prediction (apparently showing the Liberator being destroyed) seen at the end of the episode when he/it is introduced.

That's quite badass

graeme leggett Silver badge

The Matrix

No not that bloody film with Keanu,. the Time Lords' one. The one where you can get a fight in a quarry and resulting complaints about trying to drown Tombaker at Saturday teatime

graeme leggett Silver badge

Re: Orac

also Muller's android that nearly take's over Orac.

room for the passing mention of Star One, the hidden computer complex that controls planetary weather, spacelanes etc for the Federation and also lies on the approach from Andromeda. with beyond it the "biggest antimatter minefield ever put together"

like the start to the episode "Star One" with two ships on collision course "Keldan Control, I have four thousand passengers on this ship and that ore carrier is still on zero-four-zero"

and later

Servalan "Star One is the most secure installation in the Federation."

DURKIM: "I know that"

SERVALAN: " Do you know why it's so thoroughly secure?"

DURKIM: Well, presumably because knowledge of its location is severely restricted.

SERVALAN: No! Knowledge of it's location is non-existent....no one knows where Star One is! No-one at all!

Anastasia sounds good, though the Pilot of the Future will probably be at a deskstation and not in the pointy end of Skylon.

Re: Money, Money, Money...

Didn't RR only have one rocket engine that got used? The Z2 from Blue Streak/ Europa

Most rocket development in the UK was under Bristol (via Bristol Aerojet) and Armstrong-Siddeley.

Going by the picture you are looking a little drawn and lack colour in your cheeks. Tell you what, you nip off to the south coast of France for a week and I'll OK it with your boss.

But you ought to give up that filthy pipe, it's not good for you.

Ten technology FAILS

Re: Video CD.

Laserdisk was the way to pick up somethings in good quality with subtitles as opposed to US NTSC VHS with dubbing.

Could be pricey though, Pioneer NTSC/PAL output Laserdisk players being expensive and rare secondhand.

And then DVD really took off and made everything available in a much more convenient size

Hence my defunct Anime collection on LD somewhere in the loft and a LD player in garage.

Re: VCD's

I bought the CD player add-on for my Amiga I might once have played a VCD on it.

Microsoft Office 2013 heads for the cloud but fails to soar

graeme leggett Silver badge

configuration-ability

How many of the issues - eg save to SkyDrive as default- are fixable under options/preferences?

I'm guessing default save location (and document type?) can be tweaked somewhere, if only so corporates can force some settings control through Group Policy.

Worth reading it for this phrase alone

European Parliament votes to fight ITU internet power grab

graeme leggett Silver badge

Voting

having waded through the electronic documents to

a) read the motion text ( tedious in the extreme)

b) see how the vote went, and if any particular elements did or din't support it

I found it was a simple majority vote, so there's no details. It could have been passed by two MEPs putting their hand up while a single objector was busy checking the time for the train home. Anyone know more?

what about the ability to reject a purchase

most things if bought "unseen" can be rejected under consumer protection law for reasons which include "now I've seen it for real, its not what i was looking for" as well as "it doesn't work"

There's currently opt-outs of a sort for DVDs and software to limit the "I don't like it" rejection but shouldn't there be more adequate projection against bad software and could Apple's level of control make it easier to implement a fuller no questions money back guarantee?

A history of personal computing in 20 objects part 2

Amiga A500 and Atari ST together

Since together they were the next step on the road to where we are now.

Both using the same processor and appealing to the same Market. One had the edge in graphics the other in music creation (out of the box).

Usable as was but still tweak-able/adaptable to spawn a thousand peripherals. I can confess to throwing money away at the video camera add on with it's filters to do colour image capture. The back up to VCR was more practical though.

One aspect fortunately not touched on is price. Although Amigas and the like were cheap compared to an IBM pc what the same money would buy today is beyond compare.

NATO was a Western European idea not a US one, perhaps the EU should be seen as a parallel political concept to the military one.

I dispute the claim about tapes slightly.

I once had a compact cassette go banana shaped due to being in my car in hot weather.

On the plus side, like most mass-production cassettes, I could crack it open and the contents were transferred to a fresh shell.
