It is the same - when it comes to your real house anyway.

The term you are looking for is "burglary artifice". i.e. committing a burglary, gaining entry by ruse rather than by breaking and entering.

Aha!

Welcome to Adobe's world. Not quite so funny when they move the goalposts on the little guys is it?

CS5's authoring for iPhone was the thing that needed a united front behind it as Adobe have the grunt to actually go to the mat over it, but instead teh intahwebs dissolved into a series of bleats from the screaming flashtards saying how wonderful Apple's capricious ban was for sticking it to Flash. There's nothing like allowing one's pet hates to obscure one's view of the picture for causing a monumental cockup now, is there? So that opportunity went begging, Apple got away with stomping on the big beast and now get to pick off the independants at will.

No I don't like Flash, I hate it with a vengence. But at least I could see the principle at stake:

First they came for CS5, but we did nothing as we don't like Adobe.....

Re: Romania

Er, actually I think you'll find it was the Romans (the clue's in the name) who, last time I looked, came from what is now Italy rather than Spain.

The old kingdom of Dacia (as it was called) had been something of a thorn in Roman sides for many years, conducting an on/off war with Rome. A combination of the terrain and their troops (drilled heavy armoured foot with two-handed heavy weapons) was rather unfavourable to the Roman Legion system. When the Emperor Trajan finally stuffed 'em, he renamed the place "Romania" to send a not-so-subtle message to any other places that might be entertaining ideas of sticking it to the Empire.

"...like how it's completely incompatible with the iPad's software ecosystem...."

You mean that it'll run anything you want it to rather than only those things given the Holy Blessing of the Cupertino Cultists?

The way you put that makes it sound like a bad thing.....

The real downside is almost certainly that the battery life and screen will be nowhere near as good as the vanilla product. I regard the "openness" and the agnostic attitude to one's chosen software usage as a bit of a plus myself. What'll be really interesting is if the Android based knockoffs are using a vanilla Android build without any manufacturer's "enhancements" or proprietary drivers. I'd be very interested in one of these products if it could be upgraded to newer Android releases as they turn up without having to rely on the fly-by-night maker getting round to shipping a tweaked version.

Ah, A/V disk drives.

The new Snake Oil.

The disk in my Sky+ box turned its toes the other day. On dismantling I found a Seagate drive which turned out from the part number to be a specialist A/V drive designed to run quieter and cooler while offering optimal I/O for A/V applications.

I looked up the cost of a replacement A/V spec drive and swore. Then I stuck in a spare shonky old Maxtor IDE of indeterminate vintage that I had knocking around. This has proved to be a damned sight quieter and cooler than the original with no performance problems.

X-51 hypersonic scramjet test: Flameout at Mach 5?

TeeCee Gold badge

Spaceplane.

The obvious move here would be to take off on rockets, briefly boost to scramjet speeds, then cutover to scramjets for the trip to the edge of space and finally go back to rockets for orbital insertion.

That way you'd only need two sets of engines, the rockets and the scramjets and you could do away with all the problems associated with the transition between the performance envelopes of turbo/ram/scramjets. An external droptank containing the fuel/oxidiser for the first rocket burn should solve any fuel capacity problems associated with the takeoff side of things.

Arcam Solo Mini combo hi-fi

TeeCee Gold badge

A little illustration.

Many years ago I aquired an Arcam Alpha 7 Amp and CD and a pair of KEF Coda 7 speakers. I still have 'em, very nice they are too and entirely adequate in a non acoustically perfect environment IMHO.

A mate of mine turned up for a listen and having had his ears educated went off for a think. A while later I went round to his place to find 800 quids' worth of Amp, 500 sovs of CD, a pair of AR100 speakers and several metres of sodding expensive cable. A quick listen later:

"Very nice, but there's something wrong with the right-hand speaker".

"<VAPOURS> No there isn't, it's all perfect!"

One shufty round the back later:

"Got it. You've biwired 'em but left the links on the right speaker, try it now.". Some listening later: "Yup, that's got it, spot on now!"

".........!!..............I can't tell the difference......."

Re: Seriously?

Actually I found that with DOS 6 you could wring more memory out of it with the included himem.sys and emm386.exe than you could with QEMM.

For networking, I found that the answer was to install the Novell card driver and the Link Support Layer from the ODI stack (whether or not you were actually using Novell) and then tell everything else you installed it was on a Novell network and to play nice with same. That cut out most of the memory use and all the network stack conflicts.

The commercial cuckoo hiding in the BBC's global mission

TeeCee Gold badge
Megaphone

Old news this.

I've seen the Beeb's commitment to public service TV as nothing but been a figleaf for the license fee ever since they started crowing about viewing figures "wins" over ITV et. al.

A genuinely impartial, free, public service broadcaster shouldn't give a shit about viewing figures and certainly should not be trying to compete with the "opposition". Chasing audience share just makes 'em ITV without the adverts, with a 24x7 diet of commercial crud designed to appeal to the great unwashed.

The worst part of this is it's unfair. If a flagship BBC program goes up against an ITV one and wins the audience it may make the Beeb look good, but it f***s ITV, whose revenue is derived by advertising which in turn depends on audience share. They are then forced to work even harder for mass appeal on an ever lower budget, so the effect of the Beeb's "competition" is to drive down the quality of television overall.

I guess it's what they get for hiring TV executives to run it rather than civil servants.

*Not to mention it would give rise to a whole new area of internet discussion on the best SSD / rotating disk ratio to use, complete with conflicting benchmarks and flame wars.
