Age verification biz claims no-payment model for 40% of Brits ahead of July pr0n ban

Re: What's that sound I hear?

Errr, no. Opera has a built in limited web proxy service. It will get you around geo-blocking on a limited basis but will not provide secure browsing or ehnanced privacy. You also need to be asking what Opera are doing with all that "free" browsing data that you are providing them with.

Re: Its strange

I think it's twofold, firstly I believe that it is because the US legal system is utterly corrupt. Secondly, and more importantly it's because HP have made themselves look like complete arses in plain sight of their peers and the wider global IT community, and they are now crying to (i.e. paying) the US Government to help them make a case - any case... anything... anything at all.

A case that I would hazard they themselves know is flaky at best due to their own incompetence, but that they now can't let go of due to their own arrogance and idiocy.

NordVPN rapped by ad watchdog over insecure public Wi-Fi claims

Aristotles slow and dimwitted horse

True. But NOTHING will make it 100% safe. Using a decent VPN does however reduce the risk by a few magnitudes.

Aristotles slow and dimwitted horse

Yes, there will risks with everything, so somewhere you will need to draw a line in the sand, or stick your flag in the ground. But doing proper research around your VPN provider, rather that just signing up for the cheapest or even "free-est" will help with this.

Just for reference - I'm with AirVPN as it was created by journalists, to protect journalists and therefore they have a guarantee that they do not log or record anything. Do I believe them? Yes. Can I prove it? No.

As I said, there are risks with everything.

Hey, those warrantless smartphone searches at the US border? Unconstitutional, yeah? Civil-rights warriors ask court to settle this

Aristotles slow and dimwitted horse

Re: they need "reasonable suspicion"

But I would suspect that most of the time they don't have reasonable suspicion. Considering that your average border guard is a failed police officer, or generally someone who wants "any level of authority that they can get" can get, your reasonable suspicion generally turns into "anyone I have personal prejudices against" - and that just aint right.

Re: me no understand

I thought that the Polygamy issue was the biggest schism in the Mormon faith. With the fundamentalist Mormons (read "angry and deluded") wanting to keep the decree, and then with the normal (read "generally deluded") Mormons wanting to rid themselves of it.

I'm only stating what I remember from the fantastic book Under the Banner of Heaven by John Krakauer. Great book; and despite his obvious restraint, it does paint the average Mormon follower as a whackjob who has spent too much time in the sun.

Apple, Samsung feel the pain as smartphone market slumps to lowest shipments in 5 YEARS

Aristotles slow and dimwitted horse

I dunno...

How about Apple release a device with some stunning new design features such as octagonal edges, or removal of the power switch, or a nice orange and lime colour scheme. Surely that's more than enough "next gen design" to get the faithful salivating to buy a new phone at some almost reasonable cost???

Hmm...

I'd love to agree with you, but unfortunately I can't see that anything has changed. In fact, despite them being caught with their hands well inside the cookie jar, both the US and UK governments seem to have said "what the fuck", have actually gotten worse, and will just make sure that the penalties for exposing their actions are worse; rather than actually improving their behaviours or accountability.

Most dog owners I see DO make the effort.

I'm not a dog owner, but I do run and mountain bike etc. in a lot of places that people like to walk their dogs also; and most of those owners I see do make sure they clean up after their four legged companion - but to your point... it's the same down our way. The bins are always overflowing with dogshit to the point where normal litter cannot be put in them. It's all a bit grim, especially in summer when it all gets a bit, err... ripe? I think the rules are right, but as usual, not enough thought or manpower put into how to run or enforce them.

But... horses shitting all over the roads and pavements? That's ok is it? Now that's a real problem round our way.

Interestingly...

The power seeking white man has been dominant in the USA for the last 200 or so years, and is petrified of losing that crown and influence. Interestingly though, it's thought that hispanics are now overtaking white man as the dominant ethnic group, and I'm pretty sure the mostly white establishment is petrified of this. Hence one part of that government wanting $5bn for a wall, while the rest of the world looks on in fits of laughter and continues to try to pull existing ones down...

Re: Should companies be on the hook for criminal employees' doings?

Considering the size of Morrisons as a group, if he was, as you say "the" IT auditor, then there is something VERY wrong with how Morrisons are internally audited. No one auditor should ever have that much access - solely; and Morrisons should have been more vigilant in understanding the risks, and in implementing technologies and strategies such as UAC and DLP.

So yes, they are absolutely liable because they have been negligent in their responsibilities in regards data access rights, security and handling.

Re: Avoidance vs Evasion

"I'm not sure how this would work as Starbuck's parent company is a different legal entity. If I created my own company and licensed something from another company, would the same rules apply?"

Hmmm... it's only a different legal entitly on paper. It is in effect part of the same global chain. But in this instance we are playing by legal and accountancy rules so we need to whitewash over that. The fact that the offshore entity has the same name effectively as the UK based entity is just a co-incidence right???

Yes, if you set up an offshore company as a wholly separate legal entity and licensed a product from it, and then pay them a licensing fee that (conveniently) equates to most of the UK profits that you make from shilling that licensed product in the UK, then it would work. You'd just need to lawyer up and make sure that what you are licensing is valid and that you trust your offshore corporate governance.

Is Google's new cloud gaming service scalable? Yes but it may not be affordable, warns edge-computing CEO

Aristotles slow and dimwitted horse

To be honest...

So... I don't play online so I'd rather just keep my own local processing unit (i.e. my Playstation or PC) and buy the game on a disc from a store. That way at least I can still play it in 2, 5 or 10 years time should I choose i.e. long after the service providers decide that it is uneconomically viable for them to support it anymore.

And please don't tell me that downloading is cheaper? For whom I wonder? The great promise of the PS store was that downloading games would reduce costs due to not having to produce it on disk and shipping etc. But guess what... that hasn't happened at all. If anything, they are more expensive, for longer.

I'm probably in the minority here, but similar to movies... the day I am forced to stream AAA games, or to have my "paid for" content available only at the behest of a corporate is unhappily the day that gaming as a form of entertainment no longer gets my ££££'s.

In consideration of that I'd just have thought by now that the poor lass would have given up on the academics and been snapped up by HP or Capita professional services seeing that 'F' is the benchmark for their "elite" staffers.
