Help a hack: What's in your ultimate Windows XP migration toolkit?

bob, mon!

Verify the hardware first

Do you know the machines will run Win7? If not, get in touch with someone there, if necessary talk 'em through the Control Panel -> System window and find out what processor and memory you're facing. Also, what brand/model of computers.

Most likely, if it's feasible at all, you'll want to pack in some more memory at a minimum. A brush and a couple cans of compressed air would be good, too.

Good luck, and do report back on the exercise.

FAIL

It's not a "Windows 7 downgrade"

It's an UPgrade, from Windows XP.

Whether Win 8 is an upgrade or a downgrade is the issue.

All in all, the FAIL icon just seems appropriate.

It's 2014 and Microsoft Windows PCs can still be owned by a JPEG

Update pushes "End of support notification" as well...

I presume this is the pop-up nag window that's been bruited about lately. Since I don't intend to update my XP VM, I declined that particulary "Security patch".

Regrettably for me, the latest version of Minty (201403) claims to require PAE. that may limit its "XP-replacement" potential.

How to spot a coders comment

bob, mon!
Boffin

Hobbit's original netcat code...

Around 1995 Hobbit wrote "netcat", a useful little telnet/web-broswer substitute. It contained delightful comments, including this:

/* I really want to strangle the twit who dreamed up all these sockaddr and

hostent abstractions, and then forced them all to be incompatible with

each other so you *HAVE* to do all this ridiculous casting back and forth.

If that wasn't bad enough, all the doc insists on referring to local ports

and addresses as "names", which makes NO sense down at the bare metal.

What an absolutely horrid paradigm, and to think of all the people who

have been wasting significant amounts of time fighting with this stupid

deliberate obfuscation over the last 10 years... then again, I like

languages wherein a pointer is a pointer, what you put there is your own

business, the compiler stays out of your face, and sheep are nervous.

Maybe that's why my C code reads like assembler half the time... */

.

.

.

Then there's this little gem:

/* some systems, notably linux, crap into their select timers on return, so

we create a expendable copy and give *that* to select. *Fuck* me ... */

if (timer1)

memcpy (timer2, timer1, sizeof (struct timeval));

rr = select (16, ding2, 0, 0, timer2); /* here it is, kiddies */

if (rr < 0) {

if (errno != EINTR) { /* might have gotten ^Zed, etc ?*/

holler ("select fuxored");

close (fd);

return (1);

}

} /* select fuckup */

Could be from lots of machines. I have a bank of these, from a PDP-8. Slightly chopped up so I could take detail photos.

First picture: Memory bank from some machine. Univac, maybe?

Picture 5: Google/ Cnet shows the image this was chopped out of.

Picture 9: closeup of my final project for a digital design lab? Although most of the board had a wider variety of colors (sorry, "colours").

Picture 11: ah, the fun you can have with a band printer in a self-serve computer lab :-) From artistic (dancing printers) to pornographic (feelthy peectures for real) to simply destructive (paper jam! at 5 pages/second!)

It runs the Kindle app quite well, so far. So I have a large-screen, backlit, color Kindle with 10 times the storage, for $150US. An excellent deal.

And the browser works *much* better than Kindle's little foray into that field. Haven't even bothered to try the email, I just don't care. I have better things to read.

jelly, donuts, GeV, and beauty

Funny you should mention jelly donuts --- as we should all remember from physics (or maybe cooking) class, 1 jelly donut gives about 1 megaJoule, thus about 6e15 GeV.

So you'd need around 1.2 trillion anti-bottomed beauties to get that jelly into that donut.

leading edge is the key

Iapetus is indeed tidelocked to Saturn, but that means that there is a constant leading edge to get covered with impact debris. So equal solar input on all sides will have more effect on the darkened leading edge.

Add in the possibility that reflected light from Saturn contributes to the warming --- but only on (part of) the leading edge.

Wales sizes

Turns out the New Scientist has something to say:

"...we can calculate that 1 UK = 8 Belgiums. Owing to an oversight, Wales isn't mentioned. Other sources for the value of Wales put it at almost exactly a Burma and a touch under an El Salvador. However, a Wales is bigger than a Slovenia."
