back to article Fortnite 'fesses up: New female character's jiggly bits 'unintended' and 'embarrassing'

The maker of super-hit video game Fortnite issued a red-faced apology on Friday after its new female character was seen to have some extra wiggle. The latest "season" of the game started this week featuring a new "skin" – a cowgirl named Calamity. But as gamers quickly noted, when she performs one of the games' trademark …

    Outrageous.

Such obscenities should be surgically removed, in order to not serve as temptation to closet perverts in denial like me. Clearly this is women's fault for having the audacity to be born female. How dare they defy the laws of PC sensibilities by having bits that go wibble-wobble.

The human form desperately needs to be streamlined into some shape that can in no way be interpreted as having reproductive capabilities, or even the merest suggestion of offering any kind of pleasure, aesthetic or otherwise. The pinnacle of human development will be the attainment of an utterly joyless existence as androgynous robots.

But before that happens, please, just kill me now.

Seem to recall a major argument on an item about how more women were needed in games production was that until women got involved all the male programmers didn't realize that female hps are different from male hips which affects the way they walk. Perhaps Fortnite have ew female programmers who pointed out what happens when women dance.

      Shock doctrine

To be female is to be holy. It automatically ascribes both victimhood and superiority at the same time. The vagina is the holy of holies. But breasts? Breasts are depraved and filthy and anyone who sees one or is made to think of one is at risk of eternal destruction. And as for children? It's well known that young men who view female breasts grow up to be climate change deniers and socialists.

Re: Socialists ... complaining that breasts are sexist

          Hello, radical Trotskyist here.

          Love breasts.

I think the confusion comes from the idea that socialists have an agenda for equality, and are wary that any differences between people, real or perceived, might be abused to cause harmful inequality,

Note, even the most radical socialist understands that inequality per se is not always harmful. If you have a million pounds, and I have a million and one pounds, that doesn't somehow mean you're going to starve to death, or even suffer in the slightest way, simply because I have one more pound than you do.

While there is certainly plenty of evidence that perceived or real (but trivial) differences between people do lead to harmful inequality (e.g. unequal pay for women that persists to this day, and more generally the so-called "glass ceiling" effect), the fact is that nothing we do will ever alter the fact that women do nonetheless have breasts, that the cause of discrimination against women therefore cannot possibly be addressed via those breasts, and that in reality the root cause of any and all inequality is an institutionalised problem, perpetuated by an extreme minority of powerful but increasingly geriatric dinosaurs, who thankfully will soon be extinct. And really, even they don't care that you have breasts, they only care about themselves, and see everyone else as subordinates, so they'd discriminate against you even (and probably especially) if you were a carbon copy of them.

Moreover the concept of "equality" is greatly and probably deliberately misunderstood by socialist-phobes. We don't want to create a planet of clones, we simply don't want people to die needlessly from poverty, while others lavish themselves in obscene wealth, deserved or otherwise. There's nothing in that agenda which suggests women aren't allowed to have breasts, nor that men are not allowed to enjoy them. I think you'll find that the rate of boob-related deaths worldwide is very close to zero, and certainly pales in comparison to death by poverty (e.g. 25,000 children every day, according to UNICEF).

If you're looking for the actual source of breast or any other sex-related tabooism, and indeed most forms of discrimination and causes of inequality, you need to look way over to the right, where the fanatically religious Conservatives live, and their equally contemptuous but more agnostic neoliberal counterparts.

        Now it makes sense.

The article was just confusing because it talked about how Fortnite is the only game where breasts behave like they do in real life instead of bouncing around all the time, then it talked about how perfectly somebody had modelled the physics of these ones, to be just like real life.

The issue is that they're the only realistic part of a cartoony character, that's more understandable.

As for how long they spent modelling them, I'd suggest they wrote #include <libraryname> and then added two flags to the model. Breast jiggle is modelled using the same algorithms as hair jiggle so it's not like the libraries aren't out there.

... for various meanings of 'realistic'...

Some time late last century I was amused by the female combatant in an arcade game having very clearly been created by the proverbial spotty teenager, complete with bouncing that was not limited to any particular move.

This latest one strikes me as more stupid than anything else, and to me proves my contention that 'spotty teenager' is a state of mind rather than a physical description.

OK so either there's at least three spotty teenagers I've offended, or three people who think this wasn't bad for PR, or something I had completely missed?

It's good to know if I've missed the mark but if I don't know how or why then I'll end up offending people again, and it's really annoying if I do that by mistake rather than clearly and obviously after careful forethought and planning.

That helps, though it does suggest some serious over-thinking on their part where there just doesn't need to be any.

[ TLDR: I meant stupid to assume no complaints on adding that particular feature, really didn't think I'd touch any nerves ]

Surely you would still be finding the character sexually attractive if the animation did not include the extra jiggle? Though I'm not sure how that's even remotely relevant.

It's a silly extra feature that was unwise to include without making sure there wouldn't be any complaints and that there would be full management support (ho ho) and that there could be no accusations oif imbalance or improper representation and a whole load of other considerations that are involved in the release of any feature and which it would be stupid to ignore, hence the one-word summarisation that seems to have touched a nerve for some.

On its own, it's no big deal, and I have no doubt would be a source of amusement for many but I remain unconvinced that the completely mature grown-up decision for its inclusion didn't involve giggling and puerile comments about 'jiggling boobies'.

Having an understanding of what lies behind the downvotes here means I can now wear them as a badge of pride.

How can you be sure? Cup size is based on the absolute difference between over and under breast measurements round the torso, meaning that the same cup size looks proportionately smaller on women of overall larger build. So if the accompany picture is a B cup, the character needs to be about three feet tall.

I had to look this up (Wikipedia, I;ll have you know!) and looking at how it is done, bra sizing seems to have all the scientific credentials of phrenology. I suppose they're both about the study of bumps.

Any female with more than an A-cup would at the very least be wearing a supportive bra to exercise, and a sports bra for more vigorous movement like running or jumping. There's no way that girl would be competing without one.

So for those that aren't quite 'getting it', imagine it's an animated guy: showing that there's something there in an animation is good, but most men probably wouldn't appreciate a detailed outline of the guy's penis/balls boinging with every step as if he's performing jumping jacks while stark naked while aroused. (Boioioioioioing!)

She looks like an Old West character. If the objection were about what's "competitive" they'd have critiqued the large rucksack and cookware, don't you think? Not a lot of sports bras in the Old West.

As to adding bouncing genitals to male characters and having male characters be naked and at full mast, you're being absurdly over the top in trying to criticize this.

I'm guessing you are too young to recall the Linford Christie "lunchbox" ers then?

I just don’t get understand all this wringing of hands -

I am a woman. I have tits. They jiggle when I move.

It’s nature - depending on what I am doing at the time, they may move. A lot.

    Get over it, ffs.

If people are that offended by jiggling boobies, don’t fucking look.

Stop this over-the-top PC shit, now!

I could have gone into a tirade against the lunacy of people with nothing better to do than complain about things that offend them so much they believe EVERYONE should be offended....

... but I think BugabooSue said it far more eloquently than I could ever manage.

It's because the average USian (even the females) has been indoctrinated all it's life to believe breasts are evil and the root cause of all of mankinds ills. For a people claiming to be all about freedom and liberty the average USian has a weird hangup on tits/boobs/funbags/breasts/etc.

Having been to a gym class with a similar move

I can state that looks nothing like reality.

The actual movement is much bigger, and not like a jelly. (And only looked 'flattering' on one woman, which I guess is down to resonance frequencies, yes I am enough of a geek to think about the physics as well.)

I would guess that a woman would be highly unlikely to choose such a move as a celebration, unless it was at a natural frequency, because it wouldn't look good and presumably be a bit uncomfortable.

"It does make you wonder though how much time games developers spend creating physics models for their own personal entertainment. "

i would hope most of it. the thought of games developers not having a passion for their work is frankly depressing.

Anyone looking for something more than the half-assed Fortnite jigglage might find https://store.steampowered.com/app/545250/Bloody_Boobs/ 'interesting', available cheap at https://www.fanatical.com/en/bundle/dollar-carnage-bundle

Making no comment on the quality of the gameplay (or buying it) ;)
