back to article Like tax? Love networks? UK taxmen have a job just for you

HM Revenue and Customs is hiring a head of networks, for those who fancy a real pre-Brexit IT challenge. “We’re creating a dynamic, agile technology organisation that works on two levels: we want the most amazing experience for customers and citizens, both internal and external; and we are building careers that are rewarding …

    What they really need...

...is a new "get the bastards to pay what they're supposed to" department...

...as opposed to the "special treatment for the rich and famous" section they're running at the moment (which could be classified as being an accessory to tax fraud, but that's a whole different can of worms).

    Pay AWS?

Couldn't they just knock the costs off their tax bill?

    Oh

      Re: Pay AWS?

Well, they could, but it'd only cover the first £15 million or so. I do wonder how all this lovely profit off of HMRC will be reported? Off of the UK entity or via it's low tax Luxemburg entity?

And we'll complain, but it's legal. If we really didn't like it we'd change our tax law. Or tax Amazon on turnover rather than profit as the French and Germans are considering doing...

    "Networks Delivery Group"

    In 1 year's time:

"Your personal data is perfectly safe with us and be assured that the recent error where over 30m UK taxpayer records were left in an unencrypted CSV file on an insecure AWS S3 Bucket was a one-off mistake and will not be repeated"

Watch this space .. as they say.

      Re: "Networks Delivery Group"

Like there'll be 30m UK taxpayers in a year's time.

That's assuming any of us will still be in work and earning enough to hit the tax threshold.

CDS’ predecessor, CHIEF, is supplied by IBM, and concerns have swirled for a while that if CDS stutters, CHIEF may not be able to take up the slack, and time available to sort all this out getting shorter by the day. Something else to turn the head of networks grey.

As we reported back in June: “Full import functionality [of CDS] is now due in November and export in December, with migration of traders expected to be complete in January.”

I hope HMRC is good at bullshit dodging, this reads like The Matrix, with a humongous pile of excrement, floating through the air in sloooow motion, in direction of a humongous fan.

If we count on HMRC to have heard of PRINCE2, we're delusional. Some @IBM have, however, they have no incentive to plan ahead, they know that if CDS fails, which it obviously will, HMRC will renew the CHIEF contract plus big $$$bn to adapt it to the new functionality asap. The more HMRC will be in a hurry, the more $$$bn IBM will rake in ... patience pays off!

FWIW - IBM is making CDS, not CHIEF. CHIEF is ICL.

        CDS is only partially IBM

CDS is more-or-less live - in the Agile private Beta kind of way - for a small number of Traders. Actual, real Import Declarations.

You didn't really expect a "Big Bang" cutover, did you?

CDS is only partially IBM - lots of component by other suppliers or HMRC internal grups

European Dynamics for Tariff - the tax that Importers have to pay.

Most of the other subsystems are HMRC internal development, based on OSS software and Linux platforms in AWS.

    Twaddle

Just an opportunity for some over promoted, brown nosed seat polisher to grab a large pension pot

Don't worry if you make a cock of it old chap, you'll get an OBE or something.

      Re: Twaddle

At this grade it could be a CBE.

And how likely that the successful candidate could also be a Scot (or if an outsider some one from Sainsbury - HMRC appear to have given up on folk from Severn Trent and mobile phone companies for the time being).
