back to article Lacklustre HPE storage sales fail for flash fans

Analysis Updated HPE storage products products and more sales heads should bring in the dollars and end the storage growth doldrums, if analysts are to be believed. Its 2018 third quarter results showed 4 per cent revenue growth, which is okay, and 173 per cent profits growth, which is great. But storage results were ho-hum, …

    whither HP?

Apple dropped out of the server and workstation business, HP dropped it's PCs, printers and calculators, and now apparently its cheap web servers, not to mention PA-RISC and Itanic. So what is left? Tandem Non-Stop? Supercomputing? MRAM chips?

      Re: whither HP?

We are banking on enterprise customers realising that public cloud is inadequate and that they need hybrid environments that seamlessly work between cloud and on prem. Think, expensive and complex setups like Synergy, all flash 3PAR, Virtual Connect and all the consultancy, support and licensing that goes with that. Plus Aruba and wireless stuff which we call Intelligent Edge.

A lot of new acquisitions that I am hoping we won't run into the ground with some of the dinosaurs that still handle sales side.

Volume business is dead. We are doing what IBM realised long ago.

Last time I checked flash storage was still incredibly expensive at the major vendors.

But if you build your own storage, then flash isn't that expensive at all. (Think Supermicro with some affordable Enterprise SSD's from Intel/Samsung/Micron etc.)

Sure it takes a bit of time (not that much though), but the savings are huge.

Supermicro was delisted from NASDAQ last week.

Maybe for small environments, but if you want to run your multi thousand machine vSphere cluster on Flash then you need all the automation that you get or you will spend a fortune on an army of IT staff to manage and maintain it. Its the functionality that these arrays provide in terms of DR, backups, troubleshooting, performance analytics that really saves the money, not to mention servers are still playing catch up when it comes to the Flash performance that storage arrays provide these days.

    Doesn't help...

That the HPE sales reps keep poisoning deals that are positioned for Nimble, and then rolling in with their 3par pitch and talking down Nimble.

      Re: Doesn't help...

Nimble tech was bought to supplement 3PAR, mainly infosight and the analytics. I can guarantee you they have no intention of selling Nimble solutions at the mid or enterprise range. They might combine the two so not to piss off Nimble people, but 3PAR is the only way forward.
