back to article Xen Project patches Intel’s Lazy FPU flaw, VMware doesn't need to

The Xen Project has revealed that its hypervisor is susceptible to the Lazy FPU flaw found in Intel’s x86 CPUs. An advisory says ‘Systems running all versions of Xen are affected”, provided they employ “Intel Core based processors (from at least Nehalem onwards)”. "Users have been advised that up to four hours of downtime may be required, but that the pain will come out of business hours and only after advance warning"

If you have to take down your big iron, you are out of business while you apply he patches..

Well, it's not as if you can just live migrate all your running tasks to another (unpatched) system/bring up a new patched system, then patch the unpatched system before moving tasks back to it, is it?

      Oh, wait..

What are they smoking? Both VMWare and Xen support live migration unless you're running PCI passthrough.

        Meh

        Because it's

        a) More hassle than it's worth if you operate in a single territory

        b) Planned ahead of time, probably a time that you decide for yourself or with your contact which means that it barely counts as downtime unless you're truly 24/7

        c) More complicated than you think
