back to article Security catch-up: Nigerian prince email ring cops collar ... Louisiana OAP?

The festive period was accompanied by the usual security shenanigans including breaches, cybercrime busts and serious security bugs. Those security pros returning to work this week after a well-earned break may or (may not) be relieved to know it’s largely been business as usual. Over in the United States, half a dozen of the …

You forgot that an MPs PC got hacked and a history of porn browsing was uploaded, much like the John McAfee incident I suspect.

By moving the Mozilla Firefox icon to the recycle bin, of course.

    Intel sharing

The bill includes requirements that the government provide states with any intel it has on possible election-hacking threats as well as sets up a procedure for state officials to get security clearance to view these intelligence reports.

Very laudable, but this is the sort of thing which I would have expected should happen anyway. I'm reminded of the words of the late great Bill Hicks - "the USA is the only country in the world where common sense has to be legislated"

    WTF?

Let's not let the evidence get in the way of the facts eh?

"During the 2016 election, intelligence reports have factually established that Russia hacked presidential campaign accounts ... While there is no evidence that a single vote outcome was tampered with,..."

If the Russians were able to hack the presidential elections but were so incompetent that they failed to change a single vote then why all the complaints? It is almost as if the political parties are looking for excuses for not wining the election or popular vote (I still don't know which party was supposed to have benefited from the hacking if either). Thinking about it, the Russians must be really incompetent because aren't they supposed to have hacked the Brexit referendum as well but not changed the outcome of that vote either?

He's a local US citizen collecting the cash and then transferring it to Nigeria.

I have to say that I'm impressed that this scam seems to still be effective - I got my first one of this via mail back in the early 90's and it's still running!

    No prince, just a mule...

That prince from Nigeria Louisiana seems to be just a money mule, not the main scammer.

Wouldn't surprise me if he got a Nigerian Prince™ email himself and thought he was "smart" enough to take part in the scam.

Yeah, the 419ers are always looking for someone stateside to recruit. I am so glad this guy got stopped. I'm guessing he got involved "to make ends meet" but crime only pays until the boys in blue come for you.

419 Scammers are a feature, not a bug

Had fun stringing one along for months. Convinced him I had a fleet of airplanes and was in the "commodities import trade." So I could help him fly his loot out of wherever. Finally got him to send all his banking info to a FAX number. At the U.S. Justice Department. Making a scammer believe his so-called mark was for real: Priceless.
