back to article Volvo puts Swedish families to work on driverless data-slurp trials

Two Swedish families are to start data-gathering trials for Volvo’s driverless car project, revealing that the Chinese-owned Swedish carmaker is quite a long way behind British autonomous vehicle R&D. The lucky victims applicants, the Hains and the Simonovskis, will be the first families to trial the Volvo XC90s as part of the …

How about a non chelse atractor car?

Then we might get drivinbg data from people who do not drive as if they own the road (and the pavement, given how many park on it), but have a bit of care & consideration for others.

Apologies to the tiny minority of SUV drivers who do actually drive in an OK manner

I'm guessing all that tech has to go somewhere and may be a bit bulky? As it develops, miniaturisation will kick in along with manufacturing scale and smaller/cheaper cars will be able to have it shoe-horned in?

I would assume that the sensors added are of sufficient load and size to make use of a supermini phobitive with regards to fitting people in there too :o)

I have a tractor that they can use. A 1955 Massey Ferguson TO35 to boot. Runs fine as it has just been totally rebuilt.

Probably does not go fast enough for them.... :)

It probably does for London, and would probably pollute less than some back cabs!

Maybe/probably these are the cars that would benefit most from being automated

    Chelsea tractors?

For the geographically challenged, Chelsea is in London, where SUVs don't require most of their design features such as 4WD.

The test is in Sweden where winters can be a little more harsh at times.

The council uses utility vehicles? Go almost anywhere is any condition vehicles? Who would have thought it? Obviously no reason for them to prepare for adverse conditions, is there?

Indeed. They're being used by the local council, which will shut down completely at the first sight of a weather forecast mentioning snow.

Don't Teslas already record all this information already, and send it back to Musk?

Apparently each car is sending back multiple GB of data per day.

Most, by far, SUVs are two wheel drive. Most of the four wheel drive SUVs are so equipped to improve road holding not cross country performance - just look at the tyres!
