back to article As the singularity approaches, neural network pens black metal album

If Coditany of Timeness was released without the high-tech fanfare, no one in the notoriously elitist black metal scene would bat an eyelid. Perhaps popular online US music mag Pitchfork would even give it a "6/10". The album has everything intrinsic to the sub-genre – tremolo guitars, blasting drums, barked vocals, and total …

    Well

Speaking as one who gave up on the extreme end of the heavy metal genre when I stopped listening to Venom (or "80s Geordie NWOBHM band Venom") nearly 30 years ago I do wonder what any of this musical description means.

On the other hand, I did listen to a recent Skeptics Guide to the Universe episode where they played a very Beach Boys AI composition so I understand a bit of the technological aspect - which is where I would have been more interested in this article.

    WTF is math metal?

      I don't know, but it's spelt wrongly.

A dissonant fusion of heavy metal and hardcore punk characterised by unusual time signatures, experimentation, and rhythmic complexity. I recommend just listening to Calculating Infinity, it's awesome.

        Tame

Just listened to Calculating Infinity, compared to a techno album, Industrial Assault, I used to have on tape by an obscure Belgian Dj called DJ Xcite, this is kindergarten material.

For total brain melting material, listen to Gabba :)

    The singularity ...

... is not really approaching, is it?

      Re: The singularity ...

It's a typo. They mean to say "songularity".

      Not today it isn't.

Although IIRC there's a computer generated scene from a (virtual) cowboy movie in Knuth's AOCP

Given this stuff seems good at generating "art" in a certain genre I'm frankly gobsmocked no one has already done the computer generated written pron, for which I'm told there is much online source material available.

Thought I'd heard this somewhere before.

You know that sound like a set of fucked bagpipes...

    Yeah that's right, it's ZX81 tape code.

The intro has a certain flavor of the infamous "backwards radio station"... or as you correctly put it, rogered bagpipes (filtered through Silent Hill's Nowhere)...

If "Rogered Bagpipes" has never been used as a band name before, it should be.

    ear of the beholder?

"The Dillinger Escape Plan's seminal "math metal" debut, Calculating Infinity, was also given the treatment and somehow sounds even more incoherent."

Actually seemed quite the improvement to me...

What my head feels like after 10 seconds of Dillinger Escape Plan ----->

Silicon making metal out of metal . . . it's metal all the way down.

Have you tried some Jackson Browne?

The real test of a musician is how they perform a ballad.

(Yes of course it's a Bloom County reference.)

    Metal or Pop??

The apocalypse is a long way off if this is what it can do.

This should be marketed as a track to put people to sleep, it is unbelievably boring and vacuous. I suggest that it should try pop music - it achieves the appropriate levels of vacuousness for that.

Then it's not tr00 black metal!

    \m/ -_- \m/

The gimp mask is a bit more Manowar (or, perhaps, Cradle of Filth...) than Immortal, but it'll have to do.

    Bit like

Black metal is a bit like rock music but without the rock and the music.
