back to article 'Cyber kangaroo' ratings for IoT security? Jump to it, says Australia's cyber security minister

Australia's government hopes that somewhere in the world, a vendor of consumer-grade connected electronics is willing to admit it's rubbish at security by giving itself a low score in a proposed safety rating system. The idea of security ratings for internet things emerged during last year's 360° Cyber Security Game, co-hosted …

    Great Idea!

Kangaroos are so cute and they can rip your guts out. Like the emblem of a bat putting fear into criminals so too will the symbol of the Cyber Kangaroo. Flash the Kangaroo lamp and Cyber Kangaroo Man will rush to secure your network by bouncing bad packets and black hats alike. Soon your network will be as secure as Gotham City.

It is a great idea but I have an idea for a more gentle and traditionally Australian approach featuring Cyber, the cyber kangaroo:

        Beep beep, bip beep.

What's that Cyber? Old Mr. Jones has a computer virus you say?

Bip beep bibble, beep beep boop.

Oh no! He downloaded an improved Flash player when he went to a porn website?

        Beep bip bip.

        etc.

"The Register emphasises the “cyber kangaroo” was, we assure you, someone else's idea."

    Somebody got there first?

    WTF?

A WiFi connected toilet with a password of 0000

    This s**t just writes itself.

The code monkeys who "write" this stuff (and by write I mean cut and post from anywhere they can find) have little interest in security because a) Their PHB's don't care b) They don't care (because their PHB doesn't care) c)They don't know how to care (because their PHB didn't hire anyone with any knowledge of secure software development processes).

Are you beginning to see a pattern here?

    Self reporting?

That'll work because suddenly every bit of tat will have 5 Kangaroos... even stuff 10 years old. MS.. well we know how they will react. As for rest...meh.

Yes, they'll all think it's a great idea but don't expect any company to mark it's products the less than 5 stars.

Perhaps, some along the lines of "Consumer Reports" with in depth testing? But the big question is keeping the testing independent of who gives them the funding.

Jeez, nearly a page in and no one has pointed out that a self policed standard is.....

    A reverse kangaroo court.

Just popping on the bush jacket to get some tucker.

    G'day.
