back to article Top of the radio charts: Jodrell Bank goes for UNESCO World Heritage status

Jodrell Bank is going forward for nomination as a World Heritage Site early in 2018. As featured in Geek’s Guide to Britain, Jodrell Bank is home to the Lovell Telescope, the third largest steerable radio telescope in the world, and "probably the only Grade 1 listed structure that’s on wheel," according to the site. The …

    No-brainer

The Lovell Telescope is such an obvious candidate for recognition as a World Heritage Site I'm just amazed it didn't happen decades ago. "Show of hands? Right, unanimous. Approved. Next candidate?"

    UNESCO World Heritage (minus USA)

"United Nations" indeed. The USA seems to be intent on being 'exceptional' for all the wrong reasons. It is pulling out of UNESCO, if you haven't seen the news...

But I agree the Jodrell metal beauty should be preserved and respected.

Right. Because Trump = USA, in exactly the same way that May = UK.

Now is it just me, or is much of Europe eager to punish the UK for its Brexit "sin"? Anyone care to weigh in on whether or not part of that punishment will take the form of UNESCO snubbing Jodrell Bank? I'd bet on it. The pettiness of bureaucrats seems to be a universal constant.

ESC = Education, Science and Culture. Trump doesn't do science, and culture isn't a word often associated with the US. Education is still a strong point in some places, but is it enough?

Never heard of it before until it popped in the news as being a group of has beens pushing politics. Pretty sure whatever it is, it has no status.

I have to assume you don't know Wikipedia.org either.

As for status, they have as much as countries give them and according to some Americans too much.

A list of World Heritage sites in the USA you find here:

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_World_Heritage_Sites_in_the_United_States

As far as I can remember some Americans have opposed some of the new sites added to the list because it prevents them from exploiting them economically. In case Obama is in some way involved I have a feeling I can guess who is behind this change. and why, but I would need an American to add the numbers. An example of the status they have, is for instance. that say McDonald's is not allowed to hang their name on the Statue of Liberty.

Well - they can. But they'd be in danger of losing world heritage status for the Statue of Liberty.

So what they're effectively arguing that they don't want the status because they may lose it if they exploit it?
