    Ahhh so he's mistake was going after russian cyber criminals. Or at least helping foreigners fight against russian cyber criminals. After all so long as they dont go after russians, then ther eperfectly safe.

    You would really think he would have known better...

      @AC

      Just because El Reg tries to make that connection doesn't mean it's also actually there. Until they reveal what he has been charged with you simply can't draw conclusions like that.

      Or to make this more obvious: as El Reg mentioned he worked in the cybercrime unit between 2000 and 2006. He joined Kaspersky in 2012. Leaving a 6 year long gap in between and many (bad) things can happen in 6 years time.

        code 275 means no one (in the public) gets to know anything.

        But my opinion is, whoever is high up nowadays in Russian cyber intelligence has just found out who stitched them up when they where DDosing UK betting shops in their youth.

    Choose your enemies carefully

    Don't attribute "fair and impartial" to these type of events in a country known for human rights abuses on their own citizens. This guy "knew too much" and this is the first step in keeping a lid on the situation, whatever it *cough* (failed to turn a blind eye to his own state's criminal activities) *cough* may be.

    It's off the gulag for anyone not playing ball with, or blow the whistle on, Comrade Leader Putin's Cyber Criminal Brigade. He seems a fancy chap. I see other commentards are getting with the "party line" and claiming we should remain impartial until we know the full truth. Please hold your breath for that to happen, comrade stooges. :P

      So are you referring to the UK, the USA, Sweden, Australia, Russia or any other country in particular?

        Re: Choose your enemies carefully

        Not sure where you get Sweden, Australia or the UK from? None of those countries have Courts where a person can be tried completely out of sight of the media, where it is not even possible to find out what crime that person is accused of commiting. Only the US and Russia are that dodgy...

          UK almost as bad, e.g. media attendance but not reporting.

          Suspects and their lawyer not able to see details of evidence against them, just pointless summaries if they are lucky.

          Some very nasty UK legal things going on with magic words of national security & terrorism offenses liberally sprinkled to make rights vanish.

          So. to all intents & purposes, secret trials exist - at least to level of the Russian one here where you know the accused. a catch all accusation & little else.

          Err the UK has far worse than that. You can be tried and convicted without ever seeing the evidence against you.
