I had an interesting conversation with a fellow computer trainer back in the 90s. She had set up for a training session at a major hotel conference facility. She then left the room to have a bite for breakfast. While she was out of the conference room, a member of staff replaced the video cassette player she had set up with one from one of the guest's rooms. The replacement video player had a porno movie instead of the training video. Not only that, the owner had checked out of the hotel with the training video.
So it goes...
This story isn't entirely clear. Is this just a matter of a student accenting porn with their own device through an unsecured wi-fi connection, or was it actually displayed/projected on a big screen? OR are they claiming the former caused the latter somehow? That would make even less sense.
From the video it looks like the site was displayed for all to see, hence the blurring of the screen image.
Wasn't the open network though the point of the demonstration. I believe Jarryd wass supposed to be connecting his phone to an open network automatically and then Symantec were demonstrating how they could pick up all sorts of things from his phone as a result.
Some student wag in the audience then though they'd have a laugh by also connecting. Probably wasn't fully expecting it to work but hey give a room full of students a chance and the'll try anything.
So when an ex-footy player makes this kind of mistake, everyone has a laugh, while very likely if a poor teacher in class had this happen to them, it would be an end-of-career moment. I think something like this happened in the US a while back and some poor sod narrowly escaped jail.
But he's a footy player, so everyone is happy that he shows porn to the kids (who were especially happy from the sounds of it. But half of them are child pornographers anyway according to Australian law and statistics. Happiness from all quarters! Hell, probably their parents were happy being able to boast that their sprogs had beed porned by a famous ex-sportsman.)
(I still don't get how they would have hijacked his phone to connect to the screen no matter how he was linked. Any clear explanations?)
He was demonstrating a Man in the Middle attack with an Open WiFI network. All unencrypted traffic going through that WiFI access point was able to be read. The demonstration captured any pictures that were downloaded over that network and displayed them on screen.
Anyone could have joined that open network and accessed a site displaying pictures over an unencrypted HTTP connection and it would have shown on screen.
