back to article Gartner: 20 billion things on the Internet by 2020

Gartner's predicting a four-fold increase in the number of Internet of Things devices in the world by 2020, from today's 4.9 billion to nearly 21 billion. If Gartner's mushroom-and-crystal-ball session got the numbers right, the industry's going to have to get to work reclassifying a whole lot of stuff as some-kind-of-thing, …

    So what happened to ARIN running out of new IPv4 addresses you reported a few weeks ago?

      Network Address Translation.

      e.g. 192.168.xx.xx

      One can have tens of thousands of gadgets hidden behind one external IP address.

    Zero

    I've got zero things, with the intention to add zero more in the next 5 years.

    Do smart TVs count? Mine isn't allowed the WiFi key though.

        @fr

        On any given day, it might be that the best value TV available just happens to be "Smart". Even if the customer doesn't really want "Smart".

        Retail pricing isn't always as naively simple as you assume.

        In the long run your assumption is accurate, but perhaps not on a given TV-purchase day.

    We have on the order of a hundred 'connected' gadgets...

    They're not all left on all the time of course.

    Scanning the LAN is amusing, page after page...

    99% of which will be security compromised by then.

    Primarily due to a blanket refusal by the manufacturers to provide through life updates, xref mobile phones, televisions, cars(?) etc.

    Having a bunch of (additional) attack vectors on my LAN doesn't sound that appealing, thank you very much, but I'm sure that won't deter you from trying to flog them to me.
