      Tsk tsk. That just won't do. The primary purpose of this app is conditioning the young ones to endure/accept advertising 'impressions' as early as possible. That way when they're older they don't even attempt to circumvent the ad-delivery system.

    It's not the big friendly buttons, or time limits, or even parental controls...

    What we need is a way for our kids to be able to watch some videos, but be guaranteed that what they see is kid-safe. At the moment my son has no access to YouTube on any devices he uses, but requires me to look up any videos that he wants. That can be fine, but he is getting a bit older and there is an increasing amount that it would be fine for him to be watching like walk-throughs for games or Minecraft tips and tricks.

    So, why not just turn up the built-in YouTube filtering and let him use that? Because it is rubbish!! If you lock down YouTube on a computer to be "safe" then search for a safe video and click around for a while you will very soon find serious porn or videos of teens playing a game while effing blinding and m-f-ing all the time!

      Re: It's not the big friendly buttons, or time limits, or even parental controls...

      yep, that's because it relies on users to provide feedback as to whether or not in contains inappropriate content. So, until a video is flagged by someone as inappropriate it is assumed to be suitable for all.

      Content for the new app will, allegedly, work the other way around. Everything is banned until it has been approved for YouTubeKidz or whatever they call it

        So why the new app? Just put a tick box in the normal youtube to make it work like this?

        At the moment I have 2 streams enabled for my child as they are very good and know their audience is young. But before their streams got big there are a few videos that are risqué in the language department.

        Why is a specific app needed for this? Surely a few lines of code will do.

        <is account under a certain age>

        yes

        <has video been tagged child safe by our safety team>

        yes

        <insert sweetie ads instead of normal ads>

        done

        <play video>

    Thinking of the children are they?

    Really..? Only as an untapped market since no parent can refuse a whining, crying sprog who wants the new toy. I'm surprised Google hasn't signed a deal for the wifi enabled Barbie to shove ads at the kids.

      They did sign a deal with Mattel…

      But for a me version of the Viewmaster. I don't recall any mention of ads, but you never know…
