back to article Estonian ex-foreign sec urges governments: Get cosy with the private sector on cybersecurity

Governments need to "turn from public private partnership slogans to real partnerships" on cybersecurity, former Estonian foreign minister Marina Kaljurand told the Black Hat infosec conference in London this morning. In a wide-ranging speech where she talked about everything from diplomacy to the relationship between states, …

Which reminds me, I gots to get me one of their swanky e-citizenships.

You can't but praise how well Estonia has built its digital infrastructure. I keep thinking about their e-citizenship but problem is how many people really want to open an Estonian bank account or create an Estonian company? They'd be better off selling real citizenship to people who wanted to remain in the EU.

"Cyber is so wide that states alone cannot be sufficient in providing security," she said. "It is a space where the private sector owns nearly all digital and physical assets and has the best experts. It's the sphere where civil society can produce norms, recommendations for responsible state behaviour, it is a space where civil society is also the watchdog of civil rights." .... Marina Kaljurand

From the down-votes, it would see that some folks think that "passed" is as good a euphemism as any.

    POlitician praising the private sector?

Let me guess, she, or someone in her family and close friends, now owns a cyber security consultancy company.

Something I've seen time and time again is politicians being utter incompetents at solving a problem or just tend to ignore a little issue that can be easily solved until it becomes some massive problem that is nearly impossible to fix. Then when they leave office, suddenly they found the big solution to the problem in the form of a private company that seems to know a little too much about specific challenges of solving the problem, and is willing to work with the government for a "reasonable" fee.

The former politician then decides they believe in the company so much that they decided to invest in their radical solution. Sure, it looks like the politician had been leaking information to a private company this whole time, and is now receiving a massive payoff, but that's just what one of those evil "Enemies of the State" would think.

I've no idea about her specifically, but isn't Estonia that Baltic country* that sort of did that e-gov thing quite well, unlike the series of long drawn out car crash events that is the UK (plus a few train wrecks for good measure).

Is that the system working, Crazy Operating Guy, or is it just a temporary fix on crashing systems?

    Translation

We, the government, want closer cooperation with the private sector. This means we will tell the private sector what to do and they will just do it without complaint. So when we ask to violate the privacy of our slaves, subjects, saps who voted for us, um citizens, they will roll over and do it for us.

And when we want to attribute bad behaviour to our political rivals, the private sector will concur without hesitation.

The government, in return, will pass on overinflated contracts for the private sector to grow fat upon.
