back to article Docker invites elderly Windows Server apps to spend remaining days in supervised care

Docker on Thursday plans to introduce a Windows Server Application Migration program with the release of Docker Enterprise 2.1. Some 70 per cent of Windows Server apps run on Windows Server 2003 or 2008, according to the company, citing Spiceworks stats. Microsoft ended extended support for the former in July 2015 and plans to …

    Nothing is new

Looks like the same concept as AIX 5.3 vWPARs that allow you to run apps from old AIX versions on modern Power boxes with supportable levels of AIX.

Only been around for about 7 years.

Yes, but it's nice that Windows has FINALLY got there. We've got about a dozen 2003 boxes with apps that are very difficult to get rid of. Hopefully, now we can. This doesn't fix the NT (!!!!) or Windows 2000 boxes (one of each), but at least we can focus on those separately.

What we did with these applications is to firewall them off from the rest of the network and use a VDI client to run the application with the most modern desktop OS we could. These VM's were firewalled too. Users don't really like having to use VDI to get to these apps but they are typically not used much and mostly read only legacy data.

We had one production system though. We'd being pushing to get it migrated etc for years. Six months of having to use VDI and the money and will from that department to migrate to something modern suddenly appeared. Funny how that happens.

We are still using a huge DOS backend to serve http to the users. "On the internet, nobody knows you are a dog" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_the_Internet,_nobody_knows_you%27re_a_dog#/media/File:Internet_dog.jpg

What we want more is the ability for Docker on Windows Server to do the same with our legacy *Nix stuff. Windows Server can already emulate the Linux kernel so this should be possible?
