back to article Dell is still a work in progress as it seeks to dominate all data

Why has Dell Technologies gone public again? In an interview with CNBC, CEO and chairman Michael Dell’s answer was “Well uh look I think aaahhh … it was the best option to simplify the capital structure.” Yes, I know I’m being unfair here. My own appearances on live television have not been glorious and everyone uses audible …

    Dominate Data?

Dell Technologies revealed it wants to dominate data – the making, gathering, transporting, connecting, viewing, storing and analysis of it, wherever any or all of that happens.

Getting a bit envious of Larry and his bunch of Sharks over at Oracle then?

Paris because it will end in tears for at least one of them.

Progressing the Work in Progress ...... on Another Tack with Radical Gybes

Dell is still a work in progress as it seeks to dominate all data

Looking at and approaching that particular and peculiar program from another angle, to dominate all data one merely needs to be in commanding controlling possession of the most vital and virile and viral of Prime Premium Novel Sources .... which are capable of virtually autonomously and relatively anonymously drivering progressive systems administrations, for there are surely a selection of them to tempt markets and entrepreneurs.

There will though always be just the One that is the Real De Facto Leader and True Must Have Product. There always is.

Oh, and merely is challenging and easily defeats the less than stellar gifted methinks. :-) Such is though by CyberIntelAIgent AIdDesign .... with Virtual Machinery just doing their Command and Control with IT and Computers Thing ....... and the Name of the Future Greater IntelAIgent Game Changer which one ignores at one's peril for to catch up on Increasingly More Powerful and Energetic Streams of Existence will be found to be practically impossible and too challenging?

    The reason

Why? It's not complicated, it's about the money and only the money.

A gives B shares, B gives A money. A joins the ranks of high hubris billionaires who now believe they have the answer to life the universe and everything and that it is their sacred duty to foist that on us, the unwashed ignorami.

That would be a Right UnRoyal Abdication of a Duty of Care to Provide Future Needs with New Feeds. Is it Highly Treasonous?

Perhaps most interesting of all is that the company listed Big Blue, both HPs, Cisco, Lenovo and NetApp as competitors, but didn’t mention either Microsoft or AWS as competitors.

Well, IBM, Lenovo, HP, and Cisco all have a line in shifting server boxen (with IBM shifting back to more of a niche player there), and IBM, HP, and Netapp on the storage side.

My guess is that Dell doesn't think they are ready to compete with Azure or AWS on the same level? *shrugs*

  6. JohnMartin

    Interesting list of competitors

There are quite a few interesting omissions from the listed competitors, not just Microsoft or Azure, but also Oracle, Google, Cisco, and pretty much every Chinese/Taiwanese ODM and cloud vendor (if you haven't seen how big Aliyun is you're probably in for a shock). The last time I looked, MS alone was spending more on Azure infrastructure per year than Dell has spent paying down its billions in debt. Once you add in AWS, Google and Aliyun, the idea of Dell trying to compete head to head with them seems kind of silly, so it looks like they only want to say they're picking fights with people they think they can beat.

The trouble is, that even if they omit the Hyperscalers from their list, they really are competing with them for customer mind and wallet share, and the Hyperscalers aren't stupid enough to think Dell thinks of them as their best buddies either. If you don't believe me, grab a coffee with someone you know at AWS/Azure/GCP and ask them what they think of "VMWare Private Cloud" and stand back a little to avoid the mess as they spray warm beverage out of their nose while they're busy laughing at you.

Thats intrinsic tension between Dell's go to market and the hyper-scale cloud vendors is going to make it challenging for Dell to "Dominate the data" because in order to do that they'd be better of forming some pretty good relationships with them, because the Amazure Compute Platform group have some very clear intentions about drawing most of the data that Dell wants to dominate out of the datacenters that Dell sells into and put it into their datacenters under their control. In their view a customer datacenter full of Dell kit is, at best, just the new "edge" that holds a minor amount of transient data.

Oh, and one more thing, on the line "Dell Technologies’ listed competitors have all either shrunk or had other troubles of late", I feel compelled to point out that NetApp has been doing very nicely over the last year or two, and I don't think I've ever seen George K hesitate during an interview, especially when he's asked an obvious question.
