Quite. Social media should come with a serious health warning. Look at the disgusting behaviour of the smug self righteous towards Justine Sacco - yes she made a joke that wasn't particularly funny, but that in no way justified the blatant attempts to destroy her life, and the revelling in having ruined her career.
One wrong post, tweet, or picture and your life can vanish. Less of a concern if your name is John Jones or Billy Smith, but if your combination of first and surname is in anyway unique then the damage a drunken jest can cause may be unrecoverable.

I have a Twitter account. It's full of people with different interests and political affiliations arguing and moaning over who is more racist/sexist/xenophobic/homophobic.
Can't we just ban this so called "social" media for the health of society? If anything it's antisocial. Facebook especially.

You'd trust our MPs with passing that into law? They'd leave to so woolly and grey that these very forums would probably get included in the ban, not to mention Usenet or any other publicly accessible forum not directly related to a government website.

What's wrong with actually calling and talking? I don't regard texting and Whatsapp to be "talking" as too much of communication is nuances in voice (and if in the same place as the other person visual contact) is lost and rather impersonal with just text type communication.

From an admittedly anecdotal point of view, I believe reliance on Sat-navs reduces our ability to navigate unfamiliar territory. I don't think it's a huge leap to reach the point where reliance on a device that holds your 'memory' and puts you in touch with 'groupthink' 24/7 would lead to a reduction in cognitive function.
Makes a lot of sense to me, but then I don't have a Smart Phone or social media accounts so what do I know.

I would think the important part would be what you actually use it for though. Relying on a satnav instead of maps or learning an area will likely reduce your ability to navigate because you're using the satnav instead of exercising certain skills. But while having a phone in your pocket gives you access to a huge amount of information in theory, in my experience very few people actually make any use of it. Being able to look anything up on Wikipedia could theoretically reduce things like trivia recall, but faffing about on Facebook and watching cat videos is unlikely to have the same effect. Given the looks on people's faces when I actually look up the answer to a question they're wondering about, very few people seem to realise such a thing is even possible. I can literally stand in front of them reading the answer off a screen and invariably get the response "Wow, how did you know that?".
I don't know if or how spending all day with a phone glued to your face might affect brain functioning, but I'm reasonably confident any effect is not due to everyone spending their time browsing encyclopedias and generally educating themselves. Social media isn't a substitute for your memory, it just provides more crap to fill it up with.
