back to article Black hole munched galactic leftovers, spewed stars, burped

The black hole at the centre of galaxy SDSS J1354+1327 sucked in gases, “burped” – and then repeated the display. As NASA explained in a statement: “The two-course meal for the black hole comes from a companion galaxy that collided with J1354 in the past. This collision produced a stream of stars and gas that links J1354 and …

Maybe the black hole's meal was heavy on beans, always produces a lot of gas...

      I'd also better be going

Some galaxies seem pretty screwed for life as we know it.

If you look carefully at ours over its history, the Milky Way isn't too safe a place for life. Not long-term and not globally. Certainly the big shiny Centre isn't hospitable and almost every star much larger than Sol is too burny and too short-lived to have nice vacation homes around it. Red dwarves, which are 70-80% of all stars are probably not burny enough though they do have the advantage of living just about forever.

Life is probably extremely rare in the cosmos.

I wouldn't be astonished were it confined, at least for the last 13 gigayears and maybe some more to come, to one planet.

Or, if Man has his way, to none in the very near future.

Turn it off and on again

So, as I understand it, the galaxy isn't working correctly and someone's trying some basic troubleshooting?

      The *galaxy* works just fine.

It's the hole at the bottom that's causing iffy's.

      They should have used LISP.
