back to article Rackspace ends discount hosting for open source projects

Rackspace has ended a program under which it offered “generous discounts on hosting for more than 150 OSS projects and communities”, but flubbed the announcement. The closure of the program came to our attention after Reg operatives noticed the Tweet below from Eric Holscher, who posted an image in which it appears the …

    They're not thinking this through...

It is obvious that withdrawing this support can't generate any positive publicity, which suggests that it's a cost cutting measure. So, as someone who isn't currently a RackSpace customer, what does this sort of thing indicate to me?

Much like switching to economy brand coffee for meetings (and I don't drink coffee), it suggests an organization with questionable financials who are frantically cutting corners, even at the risk of reputational damage. Maybe it will be an economy supplier for backup generator maintenance next month, or economy CAT6 cabling. Overall it indicates to me that I am best advised to continue not to be a RackSpace customer, even if I don't give a damn about freebies to OSS projects either way.

      Or (false) economy toilet paper.

False because each iteration of the while not clean loop uses 6 sheets instead of 2.

    "Keep their credits"?

We (sqlitebrowser.org) received the same email from Rackspace announcing about the program being ended, and thus needing to find a new home by the end of the year.

Haven't received any kind of follow up email saying anything different though. Sounds like we'll need to ask.

The way the OSS program has worked is that Rackspace would allow up to US $2k of spend on their services (per month) and not charge for it. Anything over $2k they charge for.

The term "Keep their credits" mentioned in the article is a bit confusing. Hopefully it's just a badly worded way of saying we don't need to change providers after all. :)

a bit like those skinflints that go to waitrose for a free coffee. The hope is they spend some money while slurping. If they never do you question the free coffee idea.

Nice that they let existing coffee slurpers slurp.

The good news is Rackspace still offers ObjectRocket - A hosted NoSQL database as a service platform with UNLIMITED SUPPORT INCLUDED. If your project uses MongoDB, Redis, or ElasticSearch - we've got your back!
