    One less dependency on Samsung

    for Apple then?

    Well, that's how I see this move. Guarantees a supply of memory that is not beholden to Samsung.

    Slowly but surely they seem to be getting more direct control over the key components they use in their kit.

    Will Intel be next for the chop?

    Broadcom will be a different kettle of fish though.

    Apple is an interesting factor here.

    I'm curious to know if Apple has any options for increasing its share of the venture - this would be an excellent place for them to go vertical, as last I checked they are the world's largest consumer of flash memory. On the plus side from WD's perspective, Apple would probably take a dim view on shenanigans between them and their rivals.
