back to article GitHub CEO Wanstrath: 'Our goal is no outages'

GitHub has tried to reassure users that it is targeting zero downtime with the help of new data centres and infrastructure software – some being open-sourced. “The fundamentals of GitHub is it’s there when you need it. GitHub needs to be as reliable as a light switch or a dial tone,” chief executive Chris Wanstrath told The …

I use GitLab, and when they had they're mad outage I downloaded the CE version, and installed it on to my own server with my own backups etc. SInce then GitLab, for the most part, have been fine. But so has my own installation.

Thing is, as with everything, if something is so mission critical to your work then why do you outsource it to other people? At least if my own server goes down with my repo's, it's on me to fix it and it'll probably be my own fault for doing something wrong. But at least I can fix it in a timely manner to get it resolved quickly.

Like those of us who were there for the GitLab outage, yeah they handled it OK but I couldn't commit or pull anything for a good day and a bit while they sorted themselves out. I didn't plan for that, and saying "Well they're fixing it apparently but I don't know when it will be sorted out" doesn't actually wash with other people who are reliant on you to do a job.

Paddle your own canoe, as they say.

    Funny that ..

    "Our goal is no outages'"

Isn't that the same goal as British Airways?

No. BA have "managed" outages. PR managed that is.

    I have goals, too..

    My goals are:

    1) Marry Cindy Crawford (Gemma Arterton is an acceptable second choice here)

    2) Be a multi-millionaire

    3) Live on a private island in the Caribbean

Note to Chris Wanstrath: Anyone can come up with some goals - that's not the same as having realistic goals, or being certain you can achieve them.

On a different note - there's almost three times as many repos as developers? That doesn't sound like it's being used much by teams, but mainly by individuals with multiple projects each.

Yeah but it's a bit of a come down from Cindy Crawford to go to Gemma Arterton.

I mean, have you not seen Emma Bunton these days?

    Abuse of Git

The really funny thing is that they made us believe you need a central repository like GH to do your work. In an ideal world, you'd push straight to your CI system, to your CD system, share direct code with your colleagues, and GH would just be a backup and (meh) code review system - that's the sort of workflow Git was made for, not a faster Subversion. Good marketing.
