That kind of sums up the US of A these days, certainly at the federal level, and in some states, too. Everyone is so busy riding their party's hobby horses and vilifying the opposition that nobody is even making an appearance of trying to work together.
The original Constitutional Convention was full of strong personalities who disagreed on many points. However, they were able to work together and come to a compromise which became the U.S. Constitution. Would to $DEITY that selfsame spirit were alive and living in this country today. But it isn't. Instead, nowadays, even the media are divided and spew out "facts" that support their predetermined view of reality while vilifying the opposition. If Trump opened death camps for crippled people, one side of the media would praise him; if Trump ran into a burning building and personally rescued several children, the other side of the media would at least insinuate that Trump had started the fire. It doesn't matter what you do. It's all about whose side you're on these days.
Today for most everyone in government it's "my way or highway!" regardless of which side of the Great Liberal/Conservative Divide they're on. I wish there was a way back to the spirit of compromise that helped build this country, but I'm not sure there is, short of total disaster.

That is "the great diversion" foisted on you by whatever media keeps telling you this lie. The US is run by a plutocracy, sometimes Democrabs, sometimes Repubican'ts, but always the same two sides of the same coin. And I do mean coin, as in money, as in bribes disguised as lobbying gifts. *spits* And choosing a wildly racist and psychopathic orange-wigged orange-skinned billionaire business bonehead is a step in the opposite direction.
Once you wake up the facts of the real world, and if you would still like to get rid of the plutocracy, we merely need to work together to; 1) destroy the Republican Party, 2) destroy the Democratic Party, 3) seriously get the dirty money out of politics, 4) reset the board and start again. If that does not makes sense, you are part of a bigger problem of people too stupid to make serious decisions about anything other than what flavor ice cream you should purchase. And even that is suspect to unnecessary bias, and little, if any, scientific method to help decide. Falling for the "right vs left" pretend fight is what keeps the dumb people from noticing that only money decides anything anymore. Your vote, your wishes, your comments all mean nothing to the scumbags you probably help lifted into power. You got duped. And it looks like you're not learning any better. Time to wake up, Neo.

There's only that little thing, that it led to the U.S. Constitution enshrining slavery, and added the Three-Fifths compromise to help slave states be the major influence on the whole country.
So if compromising means allowing a part of the population to quite literally crush another because of its skin colour, I'm not looking forward to it.

The problem is that not compromising means that the very few people who have wealth crush everyone else to keep it that way.
There might not be 'poor' seats on the bus or in the cafe, but that's only because the oppressors have no intention of ever sharing space even that close to the rest of us.
