back to article Twitter app pwned by pro-Turkey hackers: Users' accounts sling 'Nazi' slurs

A hack against the Counter third-party Twitter app was used to push propaganda messages containing swastikas through numerous high profile accounts on Wednesday. The propaganda messages (screenshot below) labelled both Germany and the Netherlands as "Nazis" over the two European nations' recent dealings with Turkey. Both …

Will we still be sending our F35 fighter engines to Turkey for maintenance?

Judging by the countries that our weapons industry is happy to sell arms to, that shouldn't be any kind of problem. Unless, of course, their profits are threatened.

That's somewhat amusing coming from Stalin MkII, Erdogan. If ever there was a flashpoint for a serious war to break out it's Turkey and soon.

    Turkish diplomacy

Calling Dutch "Nazis", pure class. Do people in the Turkish government think everybody will forget this within a few weeks?

I feel bad for the fine Turkish people here in Grumpenland (and in other parts of Europe), as they might get backlash they deserve the least.

What galls me is how many Turks in Germany are pro-Erdogan. If they think he's such a great führer why are they not on the next plane to Istanbul to live in the paradise he's creating for them?

What's scary is what's happening to anti-Erdogan Turks here. There's reports of people being spied on or beaten, simply for saying they disagree with Erdogan and are voting No in this upcoming referendum. The Verfassungsschutz need to have a good look at what some turkish organisations are up to.

The comments of the turkish regime have really shown their true colours and their desperation. I hope EU companies with business interests in Turkey are considering their positions (e.g. VW/MAN has a bus factory in Ankara, MediaMarkt has plenty of stores there, too)

    Genocide Anyone

All Erdogan is doing is continuing the 'family' line in genocide, once it was Armenia now it is the Kurds, all he wants is a freer reign. Long may he fail.

Yes the ordinary Turks will suffer increasing problems, but if they want a leader like that, the consequences have not arrived through me.

    swastika?

I spotted one of these this morning and alerted the account holder.

Am I the only one surprised to see a unicode swastika symbol? I know it is a Hindu symbol cruelly appropriated but I would have thought it would not be supported by the various risk averse organise these sort of standards. I am not sure where I stand on its inclusion just genuinely surprised.

The evil connotations of the symbol are a pain especially when trying to teach rotational symmetry!

IMO inclusion is fine: time will hopefully distance the swastika off the Nazi connotation.

      > ...teach rotational symmetry!

Similar here: a search for lattice tiles with 4-fold rotational symmetries. I suspect I hold the world record for the number of swastik-oid figures on my disk (tens of thousands). The figure obtained from 13 squares being the most simple example. No chance I'll show them here in Germany, borderline illegal (no kidding), and could attract the, erm, wrong audience.

  9. Your alien overlord - fear me

I wonder if Erdogan realises Nazi is short for Nationalist (Socialist) - so if he's playing the nationalist card, guess who is the real Nazi?

It should also be remembered that Turkey was Germany's ally in WW1 and was technically neutral in WW2 but had no qualms supplying Germany with much needed goods to help their war effort. History eh, how inconvenient !!!!

    1. GrumpenKraut

      > Nazi is short for Nationalist (Socialist)

Nazi is short for Nationalsozialist (roughly: "national socialist"), thats purely the words. Anyone suggesting the Nazis were/are socialists is terminally stupid (I am NOT saying you implied this).

Oh, Wiki-clicky, English version redirects here.

How do you say "Godwin point" in Turkish?

It's weird that a country who is running towards dictatorship, who committed genocide but never admitted it, where journalists are massively put in jail dares to call others "Nazis"...

The book "Constantinople - City of the World's Desire, 1453-1924" by Philip Mansel is a fascinating read about the history of Turkey. The current situation is a case of deja vu - several times over.

    Twitter Counter

It's funny how an app that is supposed to count something requests write (posting) permission on your Twitter account. Even Graham Cluley (well-known security guy), who was caught in this attack as well, did fall for it.

Now if you look at the press site of Twitter Counter, their last post is from November last year. Topic? "We're sorry we were hacked, but we fixed it now."

    Well, duh.

At least they can copy-and-paste that press release for today.

    Widespread Nazism?

Not sure how "widespread" Nazism is in the west, but the rise of people like Trump, LePen and so on have brought them out of the woodwork and politically engaged for the first time since Hitler fell. Not suggesting all their supporters are Nazis, obviously only a very small portion are, but the views being expressed have made them comfortable enough to come out of the shadows which is rather concerning.

      Re: Widespread Nazism?

"the rise of people like Trump, LePen and so on". Apart of being loudmouthed, I don't see much similarities between the two. One is just a greedy mythomaniac pathological liar. LePen is not coming out of the shadow, she and her father have been in the presidential race for more than 40 years. He reached 2nd tour 15 years ago, being openly far right and racist.
