back to article Lenovo gets into server-based storage virtualization with DataCore

Lenovo has struck a partnership with DataCore and plans to offer a Storage DX8200D appliance using DataCore software. The two have history with their set of SPC-1 benchmark results showing how parallel IO-processing DataCore software running on simple Lenovo servers apparently equals that of multi-million dollar storage array …

    How does this play out?

How will this play out with their existing portfolio? They pretty much have a product with every one in the business. Or is this replacing the Nimble Storage and Simplivity offerings that they lost one HPE bought them.

Why don't they buy someone like Maxta or even Datacore for stable R&D?

Re: How does this play out?

I'm guessing this deal was in the works before HPE made their offer on Nimble, since these kinds of partnerships take a while to put together. It could definitely be a reaction to the lost Simplivity deal, however.

There's still time for Lenovo to make a bid for Nimble, but since they're not headquartered in the US, they might face some regulatory scrutiny that a US company probably wouldn't face. Would be interesting if they threw their hat in the ring, however.

That is an interesting angle. Not surprising if it was considered because Lenovo has a former Nimble executive in their senior ranks. Cisco didn't go for Nimble. Surprised! Are they worried about messing up their relationships with Netapp? Number one objection for nimble has lack of long term strategy -- hpe or cisco could fix it. They don't have NAS or object storage, but everything else for Nimble stacks up well. Maybe Cisco is looking at bigger fish.

    Interesting hardware

It'd be interesting to see how the same hardware compares with FreeNAS 10 (recently did an RC1).

1,5TB RAM? geez! Maybe all of your active dataset will be in memory!
