    "The most obvious licencing model is one based on capacity"

    The linear pricing model is what makes it scary.

    If a vendor wants to corner the market, they should base their pricing on sqrt(capacity). That is, increase capacity 100 times, and pay 10 times more for the licence.

    This is a win-win: the vendor still sees an increase in revenue of 10 times, and the user pays 1/10th of the cost per GB.

    Metadata is where its at.

    Storing Petabytes of data is no longer the issue - its all about the metadata. Otherwise you will have a warehouse full of objects and if you haven't classified them very well - no way find them. It would be interesting once you start analyzing the data if the objects will lose some of its value fairly quickly.

    You will need a separate database - non of the vendors I have seen have given enough thought to this and using a CMS with proprietary classification methods is a sure way of painting yourself into a corner. Having to change horses with Petabytes of objects in tow will be a nightmare.

    Object life cycle management is also something that needs addressing - some objects have a limited rack life - how do we approach that and what metadata do we keep once the object is destroyed.

      Well, Caringo has already implemented Elasticsearch in Swarm and Cloudian promises to have Elasticsearch implemented in its next release of HyperStore along with Kibana, which is a data visualization plugin for Elasticsearch. So it is apparent to these OBS software vendors that being able to search for objects using metadata and display that data visually is an important aspect of running an OBS cluster. They have undoubtedly heard about the need for this from their customers.
