back to article AWS has made VMware the Airbnb of the cloud

Apologies if you've heard it before, but Airbnb is bigger than Hilton or Marriot, but doesn't own a single building. Uber is bigger than taxi companies but has never changed a tyre or burned a drop of gasoline. And now VMware's new alliance with Amazon Web Services makes it (virtually) the world's biggest cloud without having …

AWS didn't have to do this - but giving customers the freedom to host stuff on-prem via unified managed interface was too good to say no to.

I personally believe, customers should move off entirely on-prem and onto the cloud as it makes sense. Its 2016 not 2006 and the big shift to move away from legacy or wasteful platforms such as Oracle and Windows, should be on the forefront for every Solutions Architect out there.

Moving off of Windows and Oracle, completely agree, but moving to the cloud most likely will end up costing you more than on-prem, and once you grow, you'll have a tough lock-in that will drive up your cost over time.

    Layers of Complexity

While on paper it make sense to move from On-Premise to Cloud, in the REAL world the complexity that is involved is too great for it to happen overnight.

These large businesses are riddled with so much complexity that they have to migrate in stages over years so you'll see the Hybrid Cloud that will be around for the next 5-10 years.

Microsoft (i hate to say it) have a headstart as everyone uses their solution already but even they have issues. Try moving from from AD/Exchange to Office365 adds significant administrative burden and breaks many security and compliance processes.

It's not as easy as one may think!
