back to article Jailed hacker 'Guccifer' claims Hillary server gave him spillery

Romanian hacker Marcel Lehel Lazar – aka “Guccifer” – has had a chat to Fox News from a Virginia jail to claim he waltzed through an e-mail server run for Hillary Clinton. He's told Fox his breach of Clinton aide Sidney Blumenthal's AOL account gave him enough information to identify the Clinton server, which he then scanned …

    WTF?

    Fox Fairy Stories

'Impossible to know if he was telling the truth' you say. Since when did the truth and some news outlets, especially Fox need to worry about whether anyone was telling the truth or if it was just a good story they wanted to hear?

      Re: Fox Fairy Stories

Seems pretty likely it wasn't the same server, and his claim that he could see all these other IPs implying it was related to other hackers when he was poking around for a short time, but he doesn't think FBI specialists who have months to examine it will be able to see them...

Clearly he's saying things he knows some people will want to hear, in the hopes of getting a lighter sentence. We should be relying on the FBI to tell us what happened, not some random hacker who is making wild claims to hoping to make a deal and write a book once he's out.

He's about as reliable as the Enquirer story about Ted Cruz's dad being involved with the JFK assassination.

As is the FBI? I mean, agree, otherwise, but since the recent iPhone-hacking cases, I for one will never trust the FBI again, about anything, Comey or no Comey.

Well there are reasons to be skeptical of the FBI there, but that's different than deciding whether or not to prosecute someone.

Regardless of the outcome, people will think it is rigged. The FBI is going to have about 1/3 of the country thinking the fix was in whether or not charges are filed, just a different third in each case.

"It's impossible at this distance, and from such scanty information, to tell whether Lazar is telling the truth."

Well, given what has been reported on El Reg recently about “Guccifer”'s life & times I'd say the guy is mental. So, perfect match for FOX "News". He "hacked" a few e-mail accounts by guessing password recovery questions from information already in the public domain, that's about it. So my money is on "nope".

Still a win-win situation for him and FOX. FOX can concoct a jucy story. “Guccifer” will be able to pay a lawyer.

As to the JFK assassination: "How do you know the CIA wasn't involved?" "Well, the guy is dead, isn't he?"

    Meh

"Almost as if the server was receiving messages from servers all over the place."

Isn't it more likely that they were roaming clients?

Huh? An e-mail server receiving messages and from servers all over the place. Who'da thunk it?

    Inarticulate

Yeah, this Fox story is all hand-waving, no substance.

Still, Hillary's own spin on this is enough to convince me. "I never emailed classified documents through that server" and so on (left unsaid: "I spilled the beans in my own words"). She's as bad at lying as she is at opsec. On the bright side, if she wins the election, move over Snowden - she'll be the greatest Leaker In Chief EVER.
