Cloud-based secure storage outfit SurDoc has announced plans to discontinue its consumer service in order to concentrate exclusively on enterprise sales. In a statement, US-based SurDoc said that consumers have a month to download their data and make alternative arrangement before the service is zapped. Customers' …

    1. The cloud is infallible.

    2. Ok not infallible, but very reliable.

    3. Actually it's pretty flaky. You may want to use a "hybrid" cloud.

    4. Bollocks, let's just use local storage.

Anyone who stores things solely in the cloud is an idiot.

However, the corollary to this is:

Anyone who stores things solely in local storage is an idiot.

Store it in both. Store it securely. Archive it to the other. Encrypt and archive even if you trust / don't trust the cloud provider. Keep things live on-site and tie them into cloud services but not so they are dependent (this IS NOT HARD).

But, honestly, anyone who jumps on the "Oooh, cloud is scary" bandwagon deserves to have their backups deleted. Because, seriously, cloud is just remote hosted server. That's it. And if you don't have one of those or the equivalent on your other sites (now known as "local cloud"), then you're an idiot.

    You have to wonder

Money is money no matter where it comes from so who really benefits from or who would be more happy with preventing ordinary consumers from having secure cloud storage? Answers in, oh let's say 3 characters.

    Thumb Down

    Business is business eh?

Use consumers to build up and test your product, then tell them to fuck off because the real money is in enterprise sales.

    Nice.

    Stop

    A month

Again with the stupidly short amount of days to move.

Is it really going to affect the company if they support it for 6 months (I am making an assumption that all the storage plans are paid for)?

*EDIT Oh wait its a 100GB free service, so assume bait users on for free and hope they upgrade.
