The trouble with Teradata is that they've always operated a "if you have to ask the price then you can't afford it" model. Along with a rigid "our data model or nothing" solution. Both limit their market. With increasing hardware performance and better cluster technologies now around competitors can nibble away at the bottom end of that market.
I'm not sure that the IoT crowd really fit too well with the Teradata model and would much prefer something Hadoop based (yes, I know you can buy Hadoop from Teradata now but why would you when you can go to a specialist who will model your business instead of forcing you into a standard model).
