back to article Teradata launches mutant cloud, hopes IoT megabucks start flowing

Data warehouse business Teradata is to focus more on hybrid cloud services, as the company continues to try to deal with declining sales revenue while praying for an IoT tsunami of cash. At the Teradata Universe conference in Hamburg this morning the business announced it would launch a massively parallel processing …

The trouble with Teradata is that they've always operated a "if you have to ask the price then you can't afford it" model. Along with a rigid "our data model or nothing" solution. Both limit their market. With increasing hardware performance and better cluster technologies now around competitors can nibble away at the bottom end of that market.

I'm not sure that the IoT crowd really fit too well with the Teradata model and would much prefer something Hadoop based (yes, I know you can buy Hadoop from Teradata now but why would you when you can go to a specialist who will model your business instead of forcing you into a standard model).

    I find it

quite interesting, that companies WHICH OWN massive analytics technologies that can apparently do magical things like predictive analytics, sentiment analysis and purchase upsell and cross-sell analytics ( basically a fuckin fool-proof crystal ball, if you believe their marketing), can't seem to keep their businesses going in positive directions. There are many examples out there and the biggest one, well, I'm looking at you Watson. Why can't Watson predict what IBM should do to grow again?

Further, IoT revenue is a complete gamble at this point. The hype is huge, complete with multi-trillion dollar predictions from those used to playing techno-Nostradamus. But, tell me, who is generating massive profit from IoT today? Oh, that's right, no one. And when every one of the majors has an IoT suite(including GE) and they are locked in a race-to-the-bottom competitive embrace, who is going to make money then?
