Nearly three million data records worth tens of thousands of pounds have were stolen by four men from their employer, York Crown Court has heard. The men used millions of “data lines” they had fraudulently copied from their employer, Scarborough-based Emailmovers, before leaving to set up their own market-research company - …

    "EmailMovers?"

If it was up to me, they would have gone there for what they do for a living in the first place. Not for stealing data.

Disclaimer - nothing personal, just business. The business of running an email server and juggling 4+ pages of address block blacklists for people who are too litigious for SpamHouse to include them.

I hope they also paid damages

..to their prior employers. 21 months isn't much of a sentence for this crime.

Lucky they were only stealing personal records, and not something innocuous like say movies...

...because that could land them with even longer jail sentences:

Of course... The crime only affected ordinary people... now if they had done something perceived/claimed to hurt a multinational or a pigopolist it would be hang draw and quarter time... protection in the law seems more and more tied to the amount of political clout available to the "victim"

    More likely

this had nowt to do with "the right systems" and more to do with dumb, dumber and their two identical brothers not having a clue as to how to run the business properly.

    Just smart enough to try

Just dumb enough to get caught.

    Copying* already stolen data?

Given that email movers are a global mail marketing company & a number of comments on the web about them spamming, using scraped addresses

    e.g. http://blog.dynamoo.com/2013/07/mystery-spam-leads-to-emailmovers-ltd.html

*Semantics - Copying is not theft as original still there, so avoiding the use of theft.

    Strange

This case has taken an age to get to Crown Court

Two years ago it was 9 million records worth £500k* - they must have left a few down the back of the settee... Anyway, from what I understand they aren't the best company to work for anyway, don't really blame this lot for trying to make a break for it...

    * although the reporting of the Scarborough News often leaves a lot to be desired, so you never know.
