back to article Has Microsoft saved the Apple Watch with Outlook improvement?

Microsoft has updated its Outlook service for iOS to support the Apple Watch, the smartwatch the world isn't quite wearing, at the moment at least. The official Microsoft office mail client for those who have to use Apple products has been upgraded, and the new version 1.3.5 now adds the watch “glance mode” so that you can see …

    Hidden Agenda or no Agenda

The fact that one can now display one's Outlook appointments on an Apple watch is really nothing short of "trite".

Will the great unwashed public be swayed by this new founded triteness, I think not...

    Pre-Constraints :

1 : You have an Iphone

2 : You actually use Outlook to store Appointments and use the Calendar. ( Important point here)

    3 : You buy a wristjob.

4 : You charge that wristjob up every day along with your telephone.

5 : You don't forget your telephone as you leave home.

6 : You actually believe that you look cool.

And all this to be reminded of a meeting that you don't wish to attend...

It's worth pointing out that a lot of people (whether through choice or force) do use Exchange (and pretty much by default, Outlook) to keep track of their appointments..

You mean within the corporate world, not the unwashed masses that this wristjob is aimed at. And even within the corporate world, what percentage desire to own and pay for, by themselves, an Apple wristjob. We are definitely not talking the majority here.

Meanwhile, in the real corporate world, every chair-polishing tosser with enough clout to override policy has a ruddy iPhone[1]. I'm sure they'll be getting the accessory for it in due course.

Also outside of the corporate world - there are tens of millions of home Office 365 and Outlook.com users too.

"Also outside of the corporate world - there are tens of millions of home Office 365 and Outlook.com users too."

And what percentage of those use an Iphone to read outlook.com email AND are willing to stump up for an IWatch.

            Rough estimates here :

            Iphones in use 500 Million

Percentage of the market that use Outlook.com = 13%

            Therefore around (500M * 13%) users = 65 Million potential users.

Of those 65 Million how many will be tempted to buy an Iwatch amongst, other reasons, for recieving their email/calendar alerts knowing that IWatches are not subsidised through telcos.... Maybe 0.5%

            65M * 0.5% = .320K

320 Thousand new sales is nice but it certainely won't make much of a Ka-Ching in Apples pocket.

    Better than native?

    Not a big iOS user, but some clients are;

From the people that have tried it out, what's the Pro/Cons using the Outlook app over using the native apple client hooked up via activesync when talking to an Exchange (Online) mailbox?

That's the second time MSFT has pulled Apple back from the brink!

Microsoft and Apple have a symbiotic relationship. I don't actually know if somewhere in very secure safes are agreements stating "Apple don't do servers and will only have 5% of laptops and desktops and in exchange Microsoft won't do style and will only have up to 5% of phones", but if there was it would explain a lot.

Re: That's the second time MSFT has pulled Apple back from the brink!

Microsoft probably did save Apple by developing and supporting Office on the Mac, but this was, as I remember things, as much a 'stop the Feds doing an anti-trust' on Microsoft as much as saving Apple. At the time MSFT were under a great deal of pressure on a number of anti-trust fronts, and this did buy them time (when for example the integration of Explorer was distorting the market away from Netscape Navigator).

        "Apple don't do servers "

They did, but didn't really sell in huge numbers.

I think JJ was referring to the time when Bill Gates bailed Apple out (or else it would have went under) with lots of cheap cash. Apple staff booed Bill at the company meeting.

Steve : We can save the company, with this guy who will save your jobs!!1

      Apple Staff : Boooooooo.....

Bill : nods and moves on.

The first iPhone and iPad didn't sell too much either...

Only the next models increased the number of units sold. The first iPhone and the first iPad sold just a few million units. The same applies to Apple Watch.

And still anyway the Apple Watch in a few months sold many times more than all Android Wear smartwatches combined in the last couple of years...
