back to article Oz energy company AGL promises to decarbonise by 2050

Australian energy generator AGL has published a new Greenhouse Gas Policy (PDF) in which outlines “a pathway to decarbonisation of its electricity generation by 2050.” The policy means the generator will do the following: Continue to provide the market with safe, reliable, affordable and sustainable energy options Not build …

    carbon capture

"It's worth noting, however, that the policy's aims don't signal the company will walk away from coal or gas, just make sure their CO2 emissions are captured."

What is going to capture all that carbon? Invisible pink unicorns? Even if we call it carbon dioxide capture it still ain't gonna work.

Sounds like corporate speak to position AGL at the head of the queue for the feral governments $2.55B direct action reverse auction which started on the 15th of April. If AGL can use CO2 absorbing invisible pink unicorns at a lower price per tonne than other suppliers then it stands a good chance of receiving unto itself tax payer largesse. See also...

Given AGL's attempt to get rid of CSG waste water by using it to irrigate farmland (how did that ever get approved) and the surprise result that salts and heavy metals built up in the soil, I shudder to think what their approach to CO2 management might be. If it is invisible pink unicorns then we will have gotten off lightly.

It's called "having politicians in your pocket". The building industry has been doing it for years.

..that I have control over. The fact that the Feds will end up giving them @250 a year because of the RET boondoggle I can't control.

does sound like the usual taxpayer funded trough being filled

lots of subsidies from real income generating activities. So where does AGL intend to get leccy after night fall o flog to the few that can afford it by 2045 ? Time to look at going off grid so the lights stay on reliably.

and the not so fine print

Of course we will be only too happy to pass along any increases these initiatives cost, real or imagined, onto our customers

Who are they trying to kid?

So, energy shortages and price rises all round! Suits AGL perfectly, as they're one of the worst energy retailers here in Australia, on a par with Origin.

It's OK if they filter the partly burned emission gases (because that's bad for our health), but it's really not an issue at all to release the CO2. The world needs CO2. Without CO2, plants will start to die.

    Carbon pricing

The really interesting part is the decision to impute a carbon price into future investment decisions. That's a real kick in the teeth for the current government's policies. They want the market to sort it all out, and the market has decided it wants a price on carbon!
