back to article Verizon to sell iPhone 4 this month

The cat is near as darn it out of the bag. US carrier Verizon will announce next week that it's going to offer the iPhone 4. It'll be doing so during the last week of the month if reports that Apple has told its retail employees that holidays are a no-no during that period are correct. Verizon's oft-predicted announcement …

    Verizon?

Wow some people are pretty dumb. All you have to do is take out the AT&T SIM card and put in a Verizon SIM card, how hard is that to work out eh??? Once again, all that's required is a bit of common sense. However, I for one won't be buying anything from Verizon ever again.

      WTF?

      Erhm...

ATT is GSM, Verizon is CDMA - you absolutely cannot swap a SIM and go. Also, unlike Europe, it's my understanding that you can only move an ATT iPhone to another GSM network like T-Mobile by cracking/jailbreaking it.

      The problem is

Verizon uses a completely different system from GSM/UMTS in the US. The kicker: the CDMA system Verizon uses doesn't use SIM cards. Buy a phone from Verizon? Locked down forever to them, and find that it doesn't roam in 2/3 of the world given that CDMA fell out of use outside the US pretty quick.

Verizon SIMs - gold of Cibola?

Where does one get a Verizon SIM, exactly? Between the Unicorn ranch and the road to Middle Earth?

      Re: Verizon?

Problem with that scenario: Verizon is CDMA, it doesn't have a SIM card at all!

      Re: Verizon?

You could do that, but the data services won't be supported; which voids any reason to do it.

      WTF?

      @AC

It's not a case of putting a 'Verizon SIM' (good luck finding one) in the phone. Verizon is off in their own little world using CDMA where as the iPhone, like the rest of the world, uses GSM. The new phone will have a different, likely dual, radio. It'll be a different model.

Was that a troll attempt? Have you ever heard of CDMA?

Hint: That's what Verizon uses, and there has been no CDMA iPhones up to now.

      Re: Verizon

Not in the US. AT&T uses a GSM network like the rest of the world, except at 850MHz rather than the usual 900MHz or 1800MHz. Therefore like any other quad-band GSM phone, the iPhone works just fine on the AT&T network.

Verizon uses a completely different type of mobile technology called CDMA, which the currently shipping iPhones do not understand. Therefore you cannot use an iPhone, or any of the other phones you might find in Carphone Warehouse over this side of the pond on the Verizon network. Verizon phones generally don't even have SIM cards, unless they are "world phones" which support both CDMA and GSM, in which case the SIM card lets you use the phone outside North America.

      You FAIL

Verizon in the USA is a CDMA network and not GSM. CDMA networks do not use SIM cards. Therefore, you need to STFU. Have a nice day.

      You're REAL smart, aintcha?

No, actually, you're not smart. Just a little bit of research on your part would show:

Verizon does not run a GSM network. Neither does Sprint. AT&T and T-Mobile do.

Verizon runs CDMA, Sprint runs iDEN.

      Smartass.

Verizon is a CDMA network, not GSM (SIM). 4G LTE doesn't use GSM

    A) Verizon's network technology is CDMA, not GSM, so there are no Verizon SIM cards in use in the United States.

    2) Only the Droid 2 Global and Droid Pro have SIM card slots. They do not work with USA based SIM cards. They use CDMA in the USA and GSM SIM cards in Europe.

It follows then that IF Verizon does in fact announce an iPhone on their network, it will certainly be CDMA and not 4G LTE, as they just released that technology and all of the new 4GLTE phones they announced for it, are powered by Android. It is highly unlikely that Apple worked on a 4GLTE iPhone for Verizon. Even if they had, it wouldn't use GSM technology or a SIM card. Know your facts before you post.

Any cachet with owning Apple disappeared when they sold them at Walmart

Walmart is today's Woolco/Woolworths and has as much class as they did in their hey days, long ago.

They were known for selling the worst or cheapest of things, which is Walmart does.

Likewise Apple's cachet has been tarnished, especially when they are discount.

The title is required, and must contain letters and/or digits.

I'm pretty sure that it would not be possible to do that.

Verizon does not use SIM cards, and even if they did, it uses an incompatible network.

  6. Radelix

Sure it has been pointed out before

But Verizon uses CDMA hence no SIM. AT&T uses GSM and hence SIM. Now my understanding of the 2 is that in fact they are very similar except for key points to make CDMA unworkable with GSM

    Re: Verizon

Verizon doesn't put simcards in their phones, they do this deliberately to stop you from doing precisely that. That is one of the reasons you should avoid Verizon. You get tied to their phones and their pricing.

    Verizon?

You can't swap out the sim card if you're a Verizon customer because you don't get a sim card with Verizon phones. That's precisely why you should avoid them like the plague. You're tied to their phones, their pricing and therefore their contracts - unless you want to pay $400 for a $100 phone.
