Facebook has partnered with McAfee to offer users of the social networking site a free six-month subscription to its security software. The year-long exclusive deal, announced Wednesday, also involves a special (unspecified) discount for McAfee's Internet Security Suite software once the six months trial is over. Facebook and …

    Disaster waiting to happen

Free Download McAfee groups, Extend McAfee Subscription groups, Click Here to get your free McAfee emails, all pointing to malware. This I foresee.

Also you would not believe how many systems I look at which are heavily infected because the AV has expired.

    This will not end well.

    Stop

    Some clarification needed

I already expressed my concerns on this issue on Twitter earlier. I would like to know whether the "free" version of McAfee being offered to Facebook users will detect and remove 3rd party tracking cookies and spyware uploaded to Facebook user's machines by 3rd party Facebook apps such as Mafia Wars - or are they conveniently ignored just as Facebook has been ignoring them?

Personally, I would not trust security software from a vendor that have jumped into bed with a company who's founder recently stated that there is no privacy anymore and that he built his business to exploit this alleged fact after having foreseen it from a college dorm in Harvard.

    Virus v terrorist

Or rather anti-virus measures versus anti-terrorist measures.

<simile>Personally, I hate anti-virus measures more than viruses. The sheer amount of pop-ups they seem to spit out combined with the occasional massive error (such as flagging essential DLLs as malware) and the enormous load they put on my machine make me very dubious about using it at all.</simile>

I've got an firewall app flagging up unlikely outgoing connections and I don't click on crap. Seems to have worked so far.

Exercise for the reader: rewrite the <simile> for "terrorist".

Yep agree.. no way i would trust a download of any AV related software from anything other than the vendor's own site.

Not that i trust facebook in the slightest either.

I had to take a look at my work PC's event log today, we use Symantec.. i found a recent entry saying "Virus Found : Action: Leave alone succeeded".

I have no idea if this is corporate policy or what, but it kinda sums up the world of AV for me really, protection after its too late.

    McCrappee!

A perfect combination, McCrappee! "security" software and Arsebook, would you like fries with your "security" download?

    Oh goodie.

As useless as Symantec is, (just come out the arse end of trying to tell them about a new one I had found) they make it as difficult as possible to let them know new threats of which they don't already detect (that is, most of them).

Now, with their freebies, you really DO get what you pay for...

    Perfect partnership

The most privacy violating social popularity-fest joins with the most security-useless AV company. How could this not go wrong.

Ya get what ya pays for!

Wow, giving away McCrapee software. Sounds like the quality & marketshare of that company has degraded to one small step above shareware.

I'm waiting for the announcement that McCrapee has relocated their redesigned and downsized headquarters to the PFY's garage.

    Just use the free stuff.

Avast for Home is my favorite but I won't argue with those who chose AVG Free.

Avoid McAffee and Norton like the plauge.

    Fail..

I never used an antivirus on Windows in my life. Yes, I do mostly use other systems (BSD, Linux), but I still work on Windows sometimes, and I never had a virus. Just visit less porn and torrent sites; just use common sense!

Ooops, sorry, forgot we are talking about Facebook users.

I'm sure I'm not the first to say this, but...

...owing to recent devlopments, I've become of the opinion that Facebook IS malware.

    FarceBookers and other clueless people

If a person uses FarceBook then there is already a high chance that they are too dim to use, update and filly comprehend an AV application.
